Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Ä°sil Gencoglu ("ÄG") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

ÄG : I completed both my undergraduate and master's degrees in architecture at Dokuz Eylül University. Following that, I pursued my doctorate at both Istanbul Yeditepe University (IYTC) and Beykent University. My education has provided me with a strong foundation in architectural theory and practice, which I continually build upon to stay at the forefront of design and innovation.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

ÄG : My motivation to design comes from a deep passion for art, creativity, and the desire to create something meaningful. The act of producing something unique that can have a positive impact on people and the environment is what drives me. The process of transforming an idea into a tangible, functional, and aesthetically pleasing piece of work is incredibly fulfilling, and it’s this drive to contribute to the world through design that inspired me to become a designer.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

ÄG : I chose to become a designer. There has always been a fire inside me, a passion for creativity and making things come to life. Perhaps, in a way, I was meant to pursue this path, and it felt like a natural calling. It wasn’t a matter of being forced into it, but rather a deep, intrinsic desire to express myself through design and contribute to the world in a meaningful way.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

ÄG : I design a wide range of projects, including hotels, residential buildings, schools, hospitals, workplaces, and historical building restorations. However, I am particularly passionate about working on the restoration of historical monuments. There is something deeply fulfilling about breathing new life into these structures, preserving their cultural significance while adapting them for modern use. I would love to continue creating designs that honor history and cultural heritage, while also meeting the needs of contemporary life.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

ÄG : To become a design legend, young designers should focus on disciplined work and continuous learning. Traveling to different places and experiencing diverse cultures can greatly expand one’s creative perspective. It's also important to follow and learn from experienced designers, observing how they approach their work and how they’ve built their careers. Combining hard work, curiosity, and mentorship can help young designers grow and eventually make a lasting impact in the field.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

ÄG : A good designer creates functional solutions, meets user satisfaction, and delivers quality work. A great designer, however, does all of these things but also has the ability to inspire excitement and emotion through their creations. They don’t just solve problems; they create works that resonate deeply with people, evoke emotions, and have a lasting impact. It’s this ability to connect with others on a profound level that sets great designers apart.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

ÄG : A really good design is one where every detail has been thoughtfully and expertly resolved. It’s a design that not only meets its functional and aesthetic goals but also evokes excitement and emotion. When a design has the ability to inspire, connect, and make people feel something, that’s when it transcends from being merely good to truly great. I evaluate good design based on how well it solves problems, how it engages the user, and the sense of joy it creates for those who experience it.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

ÄG : The value of good design is priceless. It goes beyond aesthetics; it enhances functionality, improves quality of life, and creates lasting impact. Good design can elevate a space, product, or experience, making it more efficient, enjoyable, and sustainable. Investing in good design is an investment in the future—it can increase the value of properties, enhance user satisfaction, and contribute to a more harmonious environment. Ultimately, good design has the power to transform everyday life, making it more meaningful and efficient.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

ÄG : If I had the time, I would love to work on the restoration of another monumental project. Restoring and reimagining historical monuments is something I am deeply passionate about. These projects allow me to preserve cultural heritage while creating something that serves modern needs. It's a unique challenge that combines both history and innovation, and I would be honored to contribute to the preservation and revitalization of such significant landmarks.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

ÄG : The dream project I haven’t yet had the time to fully realize is the Mardin Cevzat Kasrı Project. Bringing this project to life is something I am deeply passionate about. It combines historical preservation with modern functionality, and I believe it will be a significant contribution to the architectural landscape of Mardin. I am excited for the opportunity to see this vision come to fruition.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

ÄG : My secret recipe for success in design lies in perseverance, never giving up, and working with a perfect partner. Persistence is key—no matter the challenges, continuing to push forward and refining ideas leads to the best outcomes. Additionally, having a strong and reliable partnership can make all the difference in achieving exceptional results. Working with the right people, who share a common vision, brings new perspectives and strengthens the creative process.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

ÄG : I draw inspiration from several legendary designers and architects, including Mimar Sinan, Le Corbusier, and Frank Lloyd Wright. Mimar Sinan's mastery in blending functionality with beauty in his architectural works is deeply inspiring. Le Corbusier’s innovative approach to modernism and his vision for urban living continues to influence my design philosophy. Frank Lloyd Wright’s ability to harmonize architecture with nature and create timeless, organic designs is something I admire greatly. These pioneers have shaped the way I think about design, and their works remain a constant source of inspiration.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

ÄG : I believe that a design is successful when it perfectly balances functionality and aesthetics. Two of my favorite designs are the Hagia Sophia and the Suleymaniye Mosque. These iconic structures combine breathtaking beauty with exceptional functionality. The architectural harmony and the way both buildings serve their purpose while creating a sense of awe and reverence are what make them stand out. They embody the perfect fusion of form, function, and cultural significance, which is something I deeply admire in architecture.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

ÄG : One of my greatest designs is the Cunda Despot House. Reviving a structure from 1862 that had nearly disappeared was an incredibly exciting and meaningful challenge. What makes this project great is the ability to bring back a piece of history while blending it with contemporary needs. The restoration and adaptation of this historic building were carried out with great care to preserve its essence, ensuring it continues to tell its story while serving modern purposes. The process of giving new life to such a significant structure makes this project especially rewarding.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

ÄG : To become a better designer, I would advise people never to give up on dreaming and working toward making those dreams a reality. It’s important to embrace creativity and perseverance. Learning about different cultures and exploring the world can provide invaluable inspiration and broaden one’s perspective. I also encourage studying art history, as understanding the evolution of design can deepen one’s knowledge and approach. Personally, I’ve always made an effort to travel, learn, and immerse myself in diverse environments to fuel my creativity and growth as a designer.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

ÄG : If I hadn’t become a designer, I would have pursued a career as a tour guide. I’ve always been fascinated by history, culture, and the stories behind different places. Sharing that knowledge and helping people explore new environments would have been a fulfilling alternative path for me.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

ÄG : For me, design is the harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics. It should result in works that are not only visually appealing but also serve a purpose and benefit humanity. A good design must align with ecological balance, respect nature, and embrace artistic integrity. It is about creating meaningful and sustainable solutions that positively impact people and the environment.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

ÄG : My biggest supporters have been my mother and my spouse. They have always believed in me and provided unwavering encouragement throughout my journey. Their support, both emotionally and practically, has been invaluable in helping me reach where I am today.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

ÄG : Determination and perseverance have been key factors in my journey to becoming a great designer. Staying focused, working tirelessly, and never giving up—even when facing challenges—have all played a significant role in helping me grow and refine my skills as a designer.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

ÄG : One of the main obstacles I faced before becoming a design master was bureaucracy, along with navigating through often unnecessary regulations. These challenges sometimes slowed down progress and made the creative process more complicated. However, overcoming these hurdles has taught me resilience and adaptability, which have contributed to my growth as a designer.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

ÄG : Designers should present their work in an artistic yet clear manner, ensuring it is easily understood while showcasing its creative essence. Utilizing various platforms and mixed media can be an effective way to communicate the design’s depth and impact. Whether through digital presentations, physical models, or interactive displays, it’s important to convey the concept in a way that engages and resonates with the audience.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

ÄG : I believe we should let the future unfold naturally. While I am excited about upcoming projects, including the Mardin Cevzat Kasrı, I prefer to take each opportunity as it comes. The key is to remain open to new possibilities and adapt to evolving challenges. What you can expect is my continued commitment to creating designs that are functional, aesthetically pleasing, and respectful of both nature and history.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

ÄG : My ultimate goal as a designer is to be an example to young people, not only through my projects and designs but also through my personality and values. I strive to inspire the next generation of designers to approach their work with integrity, passion, and a commitment to creating meaningful, impactful designs that can make a positive difference in the world.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

ÄG : People expect me to create designs that are not only better but also more beneficial to the world. As an esteemed designer, the responsibility to produce innovative, sustainable, and impactful work is significant. My goal is to meet these expectations by delivering designs that positively contribute to society, the environment, and the future.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

ÄG : Design plays a pivotal role in shaping the world around us. It has the power to solve problems, improve functionality, and enhance the quality of life. Thoughtful, user-centric designs can create more accessible, sustainable, and comfortable environments, addressing the needs of individuals and communities. By integrating ecological balance, inclusivity, and innovation, design can inspire social change, promote well-being, and contribute to a more harmonious society. Ultimately, design helps create spaces and solutions that foster connection, productivity, and happiness, driving progress in society.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

ÄG : I am particularly excited about the Mossa Bademli Project. This luxury residential development, set in a breathtaking location, integrates nature with modern design. The project consists of 39 units, including villas and apartments, and it reflects my passion for creating spaces that are not only luxurious and functional but also harmonious with the surrounding environment. The opportunity to bring this vision to life and create something truly special for future residents is something I am deeply excited about.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

ÄG : The projects that have given me the most satisfaction are the Mövenpick Hotel in Bursa, the Cunda Despot Evi, and the Mardin Cevzat Kasrı. Each of these projects presented unique challenges and opportunities. The Mövenpick Hotel allowed me to blend luxury with functionality, creating an exceptional hospitality experience. The Cunda Despot Evi was deeply fulfilling as it involved restoring a historical structure, breathing new life into a building that dates back to 1862. The Mardin Cevzat Kasrı is particularly close to my heart, as it combines my love for historical restoration with modern design, and I look forward to seeing it come to fruition. These projects not only tested my skills but also fulfilled my desire to create designs that leave a lasting impact.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

ÄG : In the coming years, I would like to see a reduction in unnecessary regulations and bureaucratic barriers within the design industry. These obstacles often slow down the creative process and make it more difficult for designers to bring their visions to life. Simplifying and streamlining these systems would allow designers to focus more on innovation and creativity, ultimately leading to better and more impactful designs.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

ÄG : I believe the design field is heading towards a more expressive and bold direction. We can expect to see a resurgence of country-style designs, with more vibrant colors and louder, more dynamic expressions. People are increasingly seeking designs that reflect their individuality and provide a sense of warmth and personal connection. As society becomes more focused on personal experiences, the design world will likely continue to embrace diversity, incorporating various cultural influences and striking visual elements to create unique, memorable spaces.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

ÄG : Typically, it takes about six months to finalize a design project. However, the timeline can vary depending on the complexity of the project, the client's requirements, and the approval processes. Each project is unique, and I focus on ensuring that every detail is carefully considered and executed to meet the highest standards.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

ÄG : I always begin by focusing on the happiness and satisfaction of the users. Understanding the needs, desires, and expectations of those who will interact with the space is crucial. From there, I work to create a design that enhances their experience, ensuring functionality, comfort, and aesthetic appeal. This user-centered approach helps me craft spaces that are not only visually pleasing but also deeply meaningful and practical.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

ÄG : My life motto as a designer is to work with patience, never compromise on humility, and embrace the principle of "less is more." Simplicity and thoughtful design are at the heart of my approach, ensuring that every element serves a purpose and contributes to the overall vision.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

ÄG : I believe that design should set the trends. Designers have the unique ability to anticipate the future, pushing boundaries and introducing new ideas that can shape and define upcoming trends. Instead of following existing trends, designers should lead the way by creating innovative, forward-thinking designs that inspire and influence the world around them.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

ÄG : Technology should be used in design to enhance and simplify human life, but in moderation. It’s important to strike the right balance—technology should serve a purpose and make the design more functional and efficient, without overshadowing the human element or the overall aesthetic. When integrated thoughtfully, technology can create innovative, user-friendly solutions that elevate the experience.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

ÄG : I primarily use Rhinoceros 3D, Allplan, Lumion, and Adobe products for my design work. These tools help me bring my creative visions to life with precision and efficiency. Rhinoceros 3D and Allplan allow me to create detailed models and technical drawings, while Lumion helps visualize projects in realistic renderings. Adobe products are essential for refining presentations and creating visually appealing designs.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

ÄG : Color, materials, and ambiance are all crucial elements in design. Each plays a significant role in shaping the atmosphere and experience of a space. The right color can evoke specific emotions, while the choice of materials can enhance functionality and aesthetic appeal. Ambient elements, such as lighting and sound, further contribute to the overall feel of a space. Together, these elements require a vision to harmonize them effectively, creating a cohesive and meaningful design that resonates with the users.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

ÄG : I hope people will ask about the balance between functionality and aesthetic considerations in my designs. I strive to create spaces that are not only visually appealing but also practical and user-friendly, enhancing the daily lives of those who use them.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

ÄG : When I see a new great design or product, I think, "This is how my designs should be." I also reflect on how I can incorporate elements from it into my own work to make my designs even better and more innovative.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

ÄG : My ideal design partner is my spouse. I believe in co-design because two minds working together can often create something greater than one. One person might see what the other overlooks, and where one faces challenges, the other might find solutions. However, for successful collaboration, a certain chemistry, division of labor, and shared design sensibility are essential. The most important aspect is trust—trust in your partner’s abilities and confidence in your shared vision.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

ÄG : The people who have had the most influence on my design are my spouse and my esteemed professor, Halil Nur Çapa. Both have provided valuable perspectives and guidance that have shaped my approach to design, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of the discipline.

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

ÄG : One of the books that had a significant effect on my design is Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino. The way the book explores the relationship between space, perception, and imagination has influenced how I approach creating spaces that evoke emotion and tell a story.

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

ÄG : I developed my skills as a master designer through hard work, extensive travel, and by observing experienced architects. Traveling exposed me to diverse cultures and architectural styles, while learning from the expertise of others helped refine my own design philosophy.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

ÄG : I would love to meet and discuss with Mimar Sinan, Norman Foster, and Zaha Hadid. Each of them has profoundly shaped the architectural world, and their unique perspectives and innovative approaches would offer invaluable insights into the art and science of design

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

ÄG : The difficulty lies in the constant need to create better designs. Once you receive recognition, there's immense pressure to maintain that standard, and the margin for error becomes much smaller. The challenge is not just in achieving success, but in continuously raising the bar and living up to the expectations.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

ÄG : My favorite color is black. I have a deep appreciation for the beauty of the Istanbul Bosphorus. When it comes to food, I love dishes made with eggplant. My favorite season is spring, which brings a refreshing energy. As for things, I admire fine craftsmanship, and one of my favorite brands is Cartier.

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

ÄG : One of my most memorable (and funny) experiences as a designer occurred early in my career when I accidentally bumped into my boss's brand-new luxury car. Years later, that same boss entrusted me with the design and construction of his five-star hotel in Bursa. It’s funny how life comes full circle!

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

ÄG : One of the things that makes my day great as a designer is sharing the same office with my spouse. It creates a supportive and collaborative atmosphere that motivates me to stay focused and inspired throughout the day.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

ÄG : When I was just 9 months old, I once crawled out of the house and got caught by a postman who brought me back home. I guess even then, it was clear that I had a free-spirited nature and a love for exploring, which would eventually translate into becoming a designer who values freedom and adventure.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

ÄG : My experiences tell me to live in the present, not to dwell on the past, and that the future is something only destiny can determine. I can’t predict what will happen, but I know that I can always pray for a better future.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

ÄG : Behind every successful design, there is hard work, dedication, and a strong sense of teamwork. These elements are at the core of everything I do and are essential to bringing great ideas to life.
