LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Eidetic Marketing ("EM") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

EM : I wanted to explore various design experiences, so upon studying industrial design in Korea, moved to London to experience graphic design and finally, obtained a degree in interior design from California State University.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

EM : I was a big fan of Automotive design. I went to College to become an automotive designer, and I've been obsessed with design ever since.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

EM : Definitely, I chose my career to be a designer who could create and sell my own designs.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

EM : I design all elements of the journey of experiences, events, and exhibits. I am always eager to explore different types of designs, but I truly love what I do.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

EM : Experience the World, Expand your Horizons, and Deconstruct your Limitations.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

EM : A good designer can make great designs, but a great designer can take the Client or Brands desires and translate that to a great design.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

EM : Approach makes a good design, and straight-forward solutions make a more effective design to communicate w/ audiences.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

EM : Good design enables audiences to think, dream, and feel optimistic.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

EM : I would love to design .......

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

EM : I have always wanted to design and create the event theme for the Winter Olympics.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

EM : Simplicity. Less is More.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

EM : Zaha Hadid, Architect. Porsche, not just cars but brand experiences.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

EM : Apple Products. They are User-friendly and have a simple approach.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

EM : My greatest design was the “Kizuna” event from my portfolio. Kizuna means relationship in Japanese. My client in Tencent Japan wanted long term business relationships to meet in respect with local business culture. We introduced “String” as a visual concept of connection, and interpreted it throughout the space and motion graphics as an overall theme.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

EM : They need to gain more world experience, but also save inspiration when it comes. I have been putting my inspirations and ideas into my notebook since 2000.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

EM : I would have been a businessman in a financial or investment field.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

EM : Design is marketing for me. I have run a marketing agency for almost 10 years, and without design and creativity, my business would not be successful.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

EM : Though I don't think I reached my apex yet I would have to say my biggest supporters were my parents.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

EM : My life in Seoul, London, and California. Different experiences, food, people, stores, and even sunshine created points of inspiration for me.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

EM : Scheduling and time management.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

EM : They should present their work w/ proper methodology to convince their client.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

EM : We are currently working on one automotive campaign beyond the conventional launching method.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

EM : The ultimate goal is to share my knowledge, limit, and experience to future designers.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

EM : People expect quite a bit, and its my job to work hard to meet those expectations!

DL: How does design help create a better society?

EM : Good design enables people to feel, talk, and share ideas with each other.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

EM : I have two ongoing projects. The fundamental concept of both projects have been shifted due to COVID-19, and the shift makes me concerned and simultaneously excited.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

EM : Recently, the World Cyber Games in China has brought me great satisfaction. It was a very challenging projectt w/ limited time and budget, but as one team, my global staff made this event happen.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

EM : Would like to see more open cooperation between designers, there has been too much unwillingness to share ideas and creativity that would help the industry improve as a whole.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

EM : Existing in the COVID-19 era, virtual concepts will be more realistic moving forward.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

EM : It really depends on the project, but normally it takes 3-4 months.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

EM : When we have a new design project, everything begins with research.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

EM : Experience and Perspective

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

EM : It is correlated. Cant say which comes the first.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

EM : The technology helps to minimize the risk and to convince my client to move forward.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

EM : 3Dmax, Photoshop, Illustrator, Vray, Indesign.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

EM : It is like water, air, and soil, all essential to growing a strong design.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

EM : How did you bring up this brilliant idea? What is the downside on your design?

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

EM : I would like to digest and utilize this inspiration on my next project.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

EM : A design partner should be able to share knowledge and creativity while simultaneously accepting creative criticism. I firmly believe in co-design.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

EM : Joe Zamora, who used to be my genius college classmate and is currently my partner.

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

EM : Automotive magazines, architecture archive. Too many books inspire me.

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

EM : Pinterest, Behance, and many books. Most of all, discussing with my creative staff.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

EM : Myself in 2001. I would like to tell myself who wasn't sure about future that I would be doing alright and that I should keep working hard!

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

EM : It was not as hard as executing the project. This recognition is rewarding and proving that I and my staff worked hard and efficiently.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

EM : Camel brown, Croatia, Porterhouse Steak at Mastro, Spring, Motorbike like Ducati, and Urus from Lambroghini.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

EM : Good life balance, communicating with my clients and my creative staff makes my day great.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

EM : Not really, but they thought I would be something great!

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

EM : Virtual World w/ no limits. The future will be better than now despite many challenges. I believe in mankind.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?
