Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Hadeer Rashwan Dezigns ("HRD") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

HRD : I graduated from the Architectural Engineering department in 2013 with a Bachelor's degree. Additionally, I am proud to hold the Associate AIA certification, which signifies my commitment to the highest standards of professional ethics, practices, and continuing education in the field of architecture. My educational background has equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of design principles and techniques, as well as the technical skills needed to produce functional and aesthetically pleasing structures. Along with my hands-on experience in various projects, I believe that my academic achievements and professional certification have helped me develop a unique approach to design that combines creativity, functionality, and sustainability.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

HRD : As a designer, my motivation comes from the desire to create something that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also functional and meaningful. I believe that design has the power to transform people's lives and experiences, and I find it incredibly rewarding to be a part of that process. I decided to pursue a career in design because I have always been drawn to art and creative expression. However, I also have a strong interest in problem-solving and finding practical solutions, which led me to pursue a degree in architectural engineering. Throughout my education and career, I have continued to explore my passion for design, and I am constantly inspired by the endless possibilities and challenges it presents.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

HRD : As a designer, I strongly believe that one's passion should be the driving force behind their career choices. I chose to pursue a career in design because of my love for creating functional and aesthetic solutions to real-world problems. Design is a challenging and dynamic field that requires constant learning and adaptation, but it is also incredibly rewarding when you see your ideas come to life and positively impact people's lives. I have always been drawn to the creative arts, and design provides me with the perfect outlet to express my ideas and make a meaningful impact on the world. I am constantly inspired by the beauty of the world around us and strive to incorporate this beauty into my work whenever possible. I believe that design has the power to shape our world for the better, and I am excited to be a part of this creative and transformative process.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

HRD : As a designer, my focus is on creating functional and aesthetically pleasing designs in various fields such as architecture, interior design, and product design. I enjoy working on projects that challenge me to come up with innovative solutions to problems and allow me to use my creativity to the fullest. In terms of the types of designs I would like to work on more in the future, I am particularly interested in sustainable design and finding ways to incorporate eco-friendly materials and practices into my work. I also have a passion for designing spaces that promote well-being and improve people's quality of life, such as healthcare facilities, educational spaces, and community centers.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

HRD : As a designer, I believe that it takes a combination of passion, hard work, and a constant thirst for learning to become successful in this field. To become a design legend like myself, young designers should focus on developing their skills and abilities, constantly pushing themselves to be better and to create more innovative designs. They should also be open to new ideas and perspectives, as this will help them to develop a unique style and approach to design that sets them apart from others. Networking with other designers and industry professionals can also be helpful in terms of getting exposure and learning about new trends and techniques. Most importantly, young designers should be patient and persistent, knowing that success in this field often takes time and effort. It's important to stay true to your vision and to keep pushing forward, even in the face of challenges and setbacks. With hard work, dedication, and a little bit of luck, any young designer has the potential to become a design legend in their own right.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

HRD : A good designer is someone who can create designs that meet the needs of their clients or users. They have a good understanding of design principles, can work within constraints, and can produce work that is technically proficient. On the other hand, a great designer goes beyond this by pushing boundaries, challenging conventions, and creating work that is truly innovative and groundbreaking. They have a strong vision and are able to execute it with precision and excellence. They are constantly exploring new ideas, experimenting with different techniques and materials, and striving to create designs that are not only functional and beautiful, but also impactful and meaningful. In addition, great designers also possess exceptional communication and collaboration skills, as they are able to work effectively with clients, team members, and other stakeholders to bring their vision to life. They are able to inspire and motivate others to work towards a common goal, and are committed to continuous learning and improvement. Overall, while good designers are certainly valuable, it is the great designers who leave a lasting impact on the field and shape the future of design.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

HRD : There are many factors that contribute to making a good design a really great design. A good design is functional, aesthetically pleasing, and well-crafted. It should meet the needs of the user, be easy to use, and provide a positive user experience. In addition, a good design should be original, innovative, and thought-provoking. It should be able to communicate a message or tell a story in a clear and compelling way. To evaluate good design, there are a few key criteria that I typically use. First, I consider the functionality of the design and whether it meets the needs of the user. Second, I evaluate the aesthetics and whether the design is visually appealing and well-crafted. Third, I look at the originality and innovation of the design, and whether it is able to stand out in a crowded field. Finally, I consider the impact of the design and whether it is able to communicate a message or tell a story effectively. Overall, a good design should be able to combine all of these factors in a seamless and effective way.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

HRD : Good design has a significant value in many ways. Firstly, it can enhance the functionality of a product or a space, making it more efficient and user-friendly. Good design can also improve the aesthetic appeal of a product or a space, making it more attractive and visually pleasing. Additionally, good design can add value to a brand or business, making it more memorable and recognizable to customers. It can also increase the marketability of a product or service, making it more appealing to potential customers. Investing in good design can also result in cost savings over the long term, as it can reduce the need for frequent updates or redesigns. It can also lead to increased customer loyalty and satisfaction, which can ultimately lead to increased revenue and profitability. Overall, good design should be seen as an investment rather than an expense. It has the potential to improve the functionality, aesthetics, and marketability of a product or a space, while also providing long-term cost savings and increased customer satisfaction.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

HRD : As a designer, I have a long list of dream projects and clients that I would love to work with if given the opportunity. There are so many possibilities, from designing a new iconic building in a major city to creating a new product that solves a significant problem in society. Ultimately, it's my passion for design that drives me to pursue these dream projects and clients. However, I also believe that design is a collaborative process, and working with the right team and clients is crucial to achieving success. It's important to find clients who share your vision and are willing to collaborate with you to achieve the best possible outcome. In addition, having a great team of designers, architects, and engineers to work with can help bring your vision to life in ways that you might not have even thought possible. Overall, my dream project would be to design a sustainable and innovative building that combines cutting-edge technology with a deep respect for nature and the environment. I would love to work with clients who share this vision and are committed to creating a better future for our planet.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

HRD : As a designer, my dream project is to design and develop a sustainable city that prioritizes the well-being of its residents and the environment.I believe that creating a sustainable city that promotes a high quality of life for its residents is crucial in today's world, and it is a project that I am passionate about pursuing. While I haven't had the time to fully realize this dream project yet, I am constantly exploring new ideas and opportunities to bring it to fruition.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

HRD : As a designer, I believe that my secret recipe of success lies in my ability to stay true to my vision and never compromise on the quality of my work. I also believe in continuously learning and improving my skills, staying up-to-date with the latest design trends and technologies. However, the most important ingredient to my success is my passion for design and my genuine desire to create work that not only looks beautiful but also solves real-world problems and improves people's lives.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

HRD : As a designer, I am constantly seeking inspiration and learning from the work of other design masters and legends. Some of the designers who inspire me include Bjarke Ingels and Mauro Porcini, as well as Dieter Rams, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, and David Carson, to name a few. Each of these designers has a unique approach to design and has left a lasting impact on the field. I am inspired by their creativity, innovation, and ability to push the boundaries of design. I believe that learning from the work of others is an important part of the design process and can help designers continue to grow and evolve in their own work.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

HRD : As a designer, I appreciate designs that showcase creativity, functionality, and aesthetics, while also solving problems. Some of my favorite designs include the 8 House by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), which features an innovative loop-shape design that creates a sense of community and interaction between residents. I also admire the Amager Bakke power plant by BIG, which turns waste into energy while also providing a public rooftop park with stunning views of the city. In terms of aesthetics, I am drawn to the timeless and elegant designs of Dieter Rams, particularly his work for Braun and Vitsoe. His clean and simple designs continue to inspire me to strive for simplicity and functionality in my own work. Ultimately, what makes a design great is subjective and can vary depending on the context and purpose of the design. However, I believe that designs that balance creativity, functionality, and aesthetics while also solving problems have the potential to leave a lasting impact and inspire future generations of designers.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

HRD : Improving as a designer requires continuous learning, experimentation, and practice. One way to improve is to stay current with design trends and advancements by attending conferences, workshops, and networking with other designers. It is also important to engage in self-reflection and critique one's own work to identify areas for improvement. Another key element is to be open to feedback and criticism from others and to use it constructively to refine one's skills. Personally, I have made a habit of constantly seeking out new learning opportunities and experimenting with different design techniques and approaches. I have also sought out mentors and collaborators who can offer valuable insights and feedback on my work. Additionally, I make a point to stay informed about new technologies and emerging design trends, which allows me to adapt and evolve my skills over time.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

HRD : If I hadn't become a designer, I would have pursued my other passion which was to be a TV or radio presenter. I have always enjoyed public speaking and engaging with audiences, and I believe that being a presenter would have allowed me to utilize those skills in a meaningful way. However, I am grateful for the path that led me to become a designer as it has been a fulfilling and rewarding career that allows me to make a positive impact on people's lives through my work.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

HRD : Design is the process of creating and planning something with the intention of solving a problem or fulfilling a need. It involves a combination of art, science, and technology to create products, systems, and experiences that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Designers use their creativity and problem-solving skills to identify and address the needs and desires of users, while considering factors such as usability, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness. Design can be applied to a wide range of fields, including architecture, product design, graphic design, fashion, and more. For many designers, design is not just a job or a career, but a way of thinking and approaching the world around them.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

HRD : My success as a designer is due to the support of many people in my life. I have been fortunate to have had mentors, colleagues, friends, and family who have provided guidance, feedback, and encouragement throughout my career. Their support has been invaluable in helping me grow and develop as a designer. I believe that having a strong support system is crucial for anyone pursuing a career in design, and it's important to surround oneself with people who believe in their vision and are willing to both support and challenge them to be their best.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

HRD : Becoming a great designer is a journey that involves a lot of hard work, persistence, and learning. It's not just about talent or creativity, but also about staying curious and hungry for knowledge. Throughout my career, I have always tried to stay open to new ideas and perspectives, and I have been fortunate to have had the support and guidance of mentors, colleagues, and clients who have helped me to grow and improve. Above all, what has driven me to be a better designer is my love for the craft and my desire to create beautiful and meaningful designs that make a positive impact on the world.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

HRD : As with any career path, I faced many obstacles and challenges on the road to becoming a designer. These included things like self-doubt, a lack of resources or opportunities, and difficulties in finding the right clients or projects. However, through persistence, hard work, and a willingness to learn from mistakes, I was able to overcome these obstacles and continue to grow and develop as a designer. It's important to remember that obstacles are a natural part of any journey, and that they can be valuable opportunities for growth and learning.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

HRD : When it comes to presenting their work, designers should aim to be creative and innovative in their approach. They should consider the context and purpose of the design and tailor their presentation to suit the needs of the audience. This may involve using a variety of mediums, such as sketches, 3D models, digital renderings, or even physical prototypes to showcase the design in a dynamic and engaging way. Designers can also use storytelling techniques to help the audience understand the thought process behind the design and how it addresses specific challenges. This can involve sharing insights into the design inspiration, the design research and development process, and the key design decisions that were made along the way. Finally, designers should be confident and clear when presenting their work, emphasizing the key benefits and features of the design, and addressing any potential concerns or challenges that may arise. By approaching their work with creativity, innovation, and confidence, designers can effectively communicate their design vision and inspire others with their ideas.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

HRD : I'm always excited about my upcoming projects. At the moment, I'm working on four residential projects, an administration building, and three FF&E and home styling projects. Each of these projects presents unique challenges and opportunities for creativity, and I'm excited to bring my design vision to life in each one. For the residential projects, I'm focused on creating spaces that are not only beautiful and functional but also personalized to the clients' unique needs and tastes. I'm also incorporating sustainable design principles and using eco-friendly materials wherever possible. In the administration building, my goal is to design a space that reflects the company's values and mission while also being functional and efficient. I'm paying close attention to the flow of the space, ensuring that it meets the needs of the employees and visitors. For the FF&E and home styling projects, I'm excited to have the opportunity to bring my design aesthetic to smaller-scale projects. I'm incorporating a mix of vintage and modern elements, using bold colors and patterns, and creating spaces that are both stylish and comfortable. Overall, you can expect to see a mix of creativity, functionality, and sustainability in my upcoming projects. I'm always pushing myself to learn and grow as a designer, and I'm excited to see where my work takes me in the future.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

HRD : My ultimate goal as a designer is to create designs that positively impact people's lives and contribute to a better world. I aim to achieve this by designing functional and sustainable solutions that are user-centered and address real-world problems. Additionally, I aspire to push the boundaries of design and explore new possibilities in my field, constantly learning and evolving my skills. Ultimately, I hope to leave a lasting legacy by creating designs that stand the test of time and inspire future generations of designers to create meaningful and impactful work.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

HRD : Design can play a crucial role in creating a better society in several ways. First, design can help solve complex problems and improve people's quality of life. For example, designs for accessible public spaces, transportation, and infrastructure can improve mobility and access for all members of society, regardless of their abilities or socioeconomic status. Second, design can promote sustainability by reducing waste, conserving resources, and creating more eco-friendly products and systems. Third, design can facilitate communication and understanding between different cultures and communities through the use of universal symbols and design languages. Finally, design can contribute to the economy by creating jobs, stimulating innovation, and enhancing the competitiveness of businesses and industries. Overall, design has the potential to make a positive impact on society by addressing social, environmental, and economic challenges and promoting a more equitable and sustainable future.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

HRD : would like to see the industry become more diverse and inclusive by promoting representation of underrepresented groups such as women and people of color. I also believe that there needs to be a greater emphasis on sustainability in the design process by considering the environmental impact of materials and designing for recyclability and renewable energy sources. I think that interdisciplinary work and collaboration with experts from other fields should become more commonplace in the design industry to create comprehensive solutions to problems. Ethical considerations, such as data privacy and the impact of designs on society, also need to be taken into account. Finally, I believe that the integration of emerging technologies like AI, VR, and AR can open up exciting new possibilities for designers, and I look forward to seeing how they can be creatively incorporated into future design projects.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

HRD : The design field is constantly evolving and changing, driven by advancements in technology, shifts in cultural values, and new challenges that arise in society. One of the biggest trends in the design field right now is the move towards more sustainable and eco-friendly design, as designers recognize the need to address environmental concerns. Another trend is the increasing importance of user-centered design, where designers focus on creating products and services that meet the needs and preferences of their target audience. This has led to a greater emphasis on user research and testing in the design process. In addition, as technology continues to advance, designers are exploring new possibilities in areas such as augmented and virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. This is leading to new forms of interaction and engagement between users and products or services. Overall, the future of design is likely to be shaped by a combination of these trends, as well as ongoing shifts in societal values and emerging challenges that require innovative solutions.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

HRD : The design process can take several weeks to several months to complete. This can include initial research, ideation and concept development, prototyping and testing, and finalizing the design. The timeline can also be influenced by external factors such as project deadlines, budget constraints, and unforeseen challenges that may arise during the design process. Ultimately, the duration of a design project depends on the unique circumstances of each project, and it's essential to work closely with the client to establish a realistic timeline and milestones to ensure the project is completed on time and to the client's satisfaction.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

HRD : I typically start a new project by first understanding the client's needs, goals, and preferences. This involves conducting research and gathering information about the target audience, the industry, and any relevant trends or best practices. Once I have a clear understanding of the project requirements and constraints, I start to ideate and sketch out various concepts and ideas. From there, I refine and iterate on the most promising concepts until I arrive at a final design solution that meets the client's needs and achieves the project goals. Throughout the process, I stay in close communication with the client to ensure that their feedback and input are incorporated into the final design.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

HRD : "form follows function," My motto is to create designs that not only look aesthetically pleasing, but also serve a purpose and function effectively. I believe that form should follow function, and that simplicity and minimalism can often lead to the most effective solutions. Ultimately, my goal is to create designs that have a positive impact on people's lives and the world around us."

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

HRD : It's a bit of a chicken-and-egg situation: sometimes design sets the trends, and other times trends set the designs. Designers often create something new and innovative that catches on and becomes a trend, while other times designers may be inspired by existing trends and create designs that fit within them. Additionally, trends themselves can be influenced by a variety of factors, such as cultural shifts, technological advancements, and changes in consumer behavior. So, it's difficult to say whether design or trends have a greater influence on each other, as both can have a significant impact on the other.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

HRD : Technology plays an important role in the design process. It allows designers to work more efficiently and effectively, and to create more complex and innovative designs. Design software such as CAD and 3D modeling programs can help designers visualize and manipulate their designs in ways that were not possible before. Technology also enables designers to collaborate remotely with team members and clients around the world, which can improve the speed and quality of their work. Additionally, emerging technologies such as AI, VR, and AR are opening up new possibilities for designers to create more immersive and interactive experiences for users.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

HRD : I use a variety of software tools to create and refine my designs, including Adobe Creative Suite (such as Photoshop and Illustrator), Sketch, and AutoCAD. For 3D modeling, I may use software such as 3D Studio Max or SketchUp. In terms of equipment, I use a graphics tablet for more precise drawing and design work, high-resolution monitors to ensure accurate color representation, and specialized printers for producing high-quality prints of my designs.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

HRD : Color, materials, and ambient play an essential role in design. They are used to create a particular mood, express a brand's personality, and affect how people perceive and interact with a product or space. Color is a powerful tool in design, as it can evoke specific emotions and create a sense of harmony or contrast. Color schemes can be used to convey a brand's identity or create a specific mood in a space. Materials are also crucial in design, as they can affect the feel, durability, and sustainability of a product or space. The selection of materials is based on their functional requirements, aesthetics, and environmental impact. Ambient factors, such as lighting, sound, and temperature, are also essential in design. They can affect the mood and ambiance of a space, as well as the usability and functionality of a product. For example, proper lighting can enhance a space's mood and make it more inviting, while sound control is critical in designing spaces for work, entertainment, or relaxation.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

HRD : I would love for people to ask me about the inspirations behind my designs, how I strive to push the boundaries of design, and the impact I hope to make on society through my work. I also welcome questions about the creative process and the challenges I face in bringing my designs to life. In addition, I am always excited to discuss the user experience and how I design with the end user in mind, as well as the sustainability and ethical considerations I take into account during the design process.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

HRD : I often feel a sense of admiration or excitement. I enjoy analyzing the design, looking at various elements such as the composition, color, materials used, and other factors that contribute to the overall aesthetic and function. As a designer, I also consider how I can draw inspiration from the design and incorporate similar techniques into my own work. Additionally, I evaluate the design's impact on its users and how it aligns with current design industry trends.
