Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer WEI CHI CHEN ("WCC") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

WCC : Graduated from the Department of Interior Design, University of Science and Technology of China

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

WCC : I want everyone to be able to turn "beauty" into a part of life.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

WCC : Choose to be a designer

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

WCC : I don't have a specific style and type, but I pay great attention to design and construction details.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

WCC : Cultivate a sense of beauty

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

WCC : I think everyone pays attention to the point is different.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

WCC : Solving the problem of the owner is a good design

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

WCC : problem solving skill!Because such ability is accumulated by experience!

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

WCC : I will design for my daughter and design a space that is exclusive to her!! Because she is always with us when she is two years old, where can't go, I can't touch it here.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

WCC : I hope to build a dream home for myself in the future.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

WCC : People-oriented, only the best

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

WCC : Yes, Tadao Ando is my master of enlightenment.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

WCC : Tadao Ando’s simplicity is a design I like very much, because the minimalist design has enough space to talk to people.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

WCC : I can't compromise on the details, and the details are my attitude towards design.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

WCC : Experience life with your heart and cultivate your own sensitivity to aesthetics

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

WCC : Strive to be a designer

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

WCC : Solving the problem is the best design

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

WCC : I must thank the owners for their trust in me and my family’s support and help.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

WCC : This thing of "beauty" is the greatest help to me.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

WCC : Repeatedly breaking through the limits of self, this is the most difficult obstacle

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

WCC : Every designer has a request for self and persistence, and I always maintain a respectful attitude.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

WCC : More focused on self-request, I will definitely knock on the door of A' DESIGN every year.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

WCC : I hope to integrate "beauty" into everyone's life and become a way of life.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

WCC : I believe they are expecting me to solve their problems.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

WCC : Integrating everyone's life is the biggest help

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

WCC : Studying details is my usual pleasure

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

WCC : I hope to be able to do some special space, such as: Linggu Tower is a challenge to the self.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

WCC : Can be more functional, rather than blindly pursuing appearance

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

WCC : At least three months

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

WCC : Thinking from "people", because "people" is the protagonist of space

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

WCC : The ultimate in the ultimate

WCC : It’s my teacher. He told me that whether it’s a good design or a bad design, it’s all worth learning. A good design should learn from it and try to transcend it. A bad design should remember the lesson. The same mistake!

WCC : I believe that designing with care will definitely be commended.

WCC : Navy, Greece, sugar-free food, winter, Massimo Dutti

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

WCC : I still remember that when I was a child, I didn’t like cars and robots like other boys. I chose girls’ toys and helped my dolls dress up my furniture and accessories. I think this is an innate talent.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

WCC : Accurate allocation and mastery of time is the way I constantly examine and motivate myself every day.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

WCC : I’ve had a keen sense of being a child, I think this is the cornerstone of the designer.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

WCC : I believe that everyone’s life must be filled with good design supplies.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?
