LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer VOATT Design Studio ("VDS") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

VDS : I think good design is the most original intuition, not complicated, not deliberate, make the complexity simple.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

VDS : Design must combine art, aesthetics and practicality to improve the inconvenience of life and visual beauty. Life needs art value, otherwise the mind will be dry and poor, I think that is not a good thing.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

VDS : The answer to this question is definitely stray animals! I want to build a building for them!

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

VDS : I want to operate the museum's planning, from buildings to interior design. The most shocking presentation of each display allows the visitors to truly absorb different knowledge.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

VDS : I often watch movies, travel abroad, and will record every beautiful scene. The scale is very important in the interior design, so we will take a tape measure with us and watch the scene at any time.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

VDS : There is a great design team, yabu pushelberg, their works are full of elegance and visual impact, let me learn the possibility of designing this aspect.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

VDS : I really like Kelly Hoppen, his control of space proportion and material is very charming and confident.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

VDS : I think the spinning bike room "HAPPY HOUR" we designed is a great design, simple, fast but very fascinating.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

VDS : First, I think I must believe that I can make a good design, and I have to absorb enough knowledge. I think this is what a good designer should basically do.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

VDS : I think I will be a volunteer vet! Go around to help stray animals.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

VDS : I think it is easy to use, practical, not deliberately processed, makes it a good design.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

VDS : My work partner gave me a lot of support and help. We spent every difficult time together and completed every impossible task. This makes me learn and grow a lot in this industry.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

VDS : Before that, I was thinking about whether I was suitable for this industry every day. Am I suitable?

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

VDS : We are doing architectural planning for our new office. This is a space for the design team after years of practical experience. I hope to bring different space feelings to the clients.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

VDS : I hope to bring the best ideas of interior design to the clients, and to make life full of aesthetics is the most needed spiritual comfort for this generation.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

VDS : I hope to create more beautiful and unexpected design and help our client get their satisfied space.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

VDS : Design is used to solve problems, and every practical design can bring considerable benefits to society.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

VDS : I like to discuss problems with the workers at the construction site and come up with the most suitable solution.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

VDS : I think that our project "HAPPY HOUR" makes me very satisfied, exactly the same as the image I started in my mind!

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

VDS : Product design.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

VDS : The design of each case is not the same. Some cases took 10 minutes to get the inspiration, but some had to plan for 2~3 years.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

VDS : I will start by finding for the case images and floor plan.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

VDS : My motto is "Things are not difficult and simple, only whether they are executed or not yet executed."

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

VDS : Trends set the designs, just like different generations create different artistic styles and artists.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

VDS : The style of the space affects the color and material, including the color that the client likes, which will affect the design.
