Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Kaj Ransvi ("KR") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.
KR : From a young age, I was fascinated by technical drawings and drawn to the unique shapes found in both products and architecture. Though I don’t have formal education in design, my passion for design and relentless curiosity have been my guiding forces. I’ve learned through experience, constantly exploring new ideas, observing the world around me, and refining my craft. This self-driven approach has shaped my journey and deepened my understanding of design, allowing me to grow both creatively and professionally.
KR : My motivation to design stems from a deep passion for improving the world around me. Every day, I’m driven by the challenge of finding better solutions for products I encounter. When I see an opportunity to enhance a product or improve its function, I feel compelled to figure out how it can be done more effectively. This constant drive for innovation and improvement is what fuels my creativity and commitment to design, inspiring me to always push for better solutions.
KR : I never consciously chose to become a product designer; it simply became a natural extension of who I am. My passion for design grew organically, and over time, it shaped my path. It’s not a career I decided on, but rather a journey that evolved from my deep curiosity and love for creating.
KR : I’ve had the opportunity to design products across various fields, including lighting, cars, jewelry, tattoo machines, watches, fashion, furniture, architecture, and technical communication. Each project has allowed me to explore different aspects of design. However, one area I’m particularly passionate about is eyewear. I would love to design a unique collection of sunglasses, combining style, functionality, and innovation. It's an exciting challenge that I believe aligns with my design philosophy and creativity.
KR : To become a design legend, young designers should never stop observing the world around them. Every detail can serve as inspiration, contributing to an ever-growing library of ideas. By consistently drawing from your surroundings and integrating those elements into your work, you’ll build a unique and evolving design language that sets you apart.
KR : The main difference between a good designer and a great designer is experience. The longer you've been in the industry, the more mistakes you've made, allowing you to learn from them. This growth leads to improved solutions, refined details, and a deeper understanding of design, ultimately elevating your work to a higher level of excellence.
KR : For me, great design is about perfection in every detail—size, color, texture, and proportions all harmonizing seamlessly. It’s not just about aesthetics, but how these elements work together to create a cohesive and functional experience. When all aspects align flawlessly, the design feels effortless, balanced, and impactful, making it truly exceptional.
KR : Good design adds value by creating products that are not only functional but also of higher quality. Well-designed products improve user experience, durability, and efficiency. Investing in good design ensures long-term satisfaction, making the product more reliable and visually appealing. Ultimately, it leads to better performance and greater overall value for both the user and the producer.
KR : My secret to success in design is staying true to my vision and creating what I believe is right, rather than following outside opinions. I trust my instincts and focus on delivering designs that resonate with my values and creativity. This authenticity and confidence in my work allow me to produce truly meaningful and impactful designs.
KR : Karim Rashid is the design master who has inspired me the most. I admire his bold, innovative approach and the way he pushes boundaries with his designs. His work resonates deeply with me, and I draw inspiration from his ability to blend functionality with creativity, creating iconic, forward-thinking designs that leave a lasting impact.
KR : One of my favorite designs is the lounge chair by Charles and Ray Eames. I admire it for its timeless elegance and flawless combination of form and function. The chair seamlessly blends ergonomic comfort with modern aesthetics, making it not just a piece of furniture but an iconic work of art. The attention to detail in its design, the use of high-quality materials, and its ability to adapt to various environments and tastes make it a masterpiece. It’s a perfect example of how thoughtful design can elevate everyday experiences while remaining relevant for decades.
KR : I remember at one time we was working with a lighting product that in my opinion did't really work, so I made a product called ”The Multilist” that worked really well and also got rewarded in several design awards, RED DOT design award, Interior Inovation award, German design award, so for me I love having an existing product and redesign it to a better product.
KR : To improve as a designer, embrace mistakes as learning opportunities and never accept limitations. I focus on continually refining my skills through experience, staying open to new ideas, and maintaining a mindset that challenges boundaries. Persistence and a willingness to learn are key to becoming a better designer.
KR : If I hadn't become a designer, I likely would have pursued a career in the restaurant industry, as I’m trained as a chef. My passion for creativity and attention to detail would have still found a way to express itself, whether through design or creating memorable culinary experiences.
KR : To me, design is an integral part of everything we encounter and use in daily life. Behind every product, whether simple or complex, there’s a designer who has dedicated countless hours to optimizing its production, usability, aesthetics, and cost. It’s a thoughtful process that ensures products not only function effectively but also enhance our experiences, making design a crucial element in shaping the world around us.
KR : Becoming a great designer has been a result of years of hard work, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of my dreams to create the best design solutions. Through perseverance, I’ve learned to push through challenges and continuously improve. I believe that constantly striving for excellence and refining your craft is key to becoming the best version of yourself in your work. It’s all about staying committed to growth and innovation.
KR : Before becoming a design master, I faced several obstacles. One of the biggest challenges was not having formal design education, which meant I had to learn through trial, error, and self-teaching. This also meant constantly questioning my abilities and proving myself. There were times of self-doubt and moments where my ideas seemed too unconventional. But my passion and curiosity pushed me forward. The lack of formal training led me to find creative solutions and develop a unique design philosophy. These challenges were essential in shaping me into the designer I am today, allowing me to grow and innovate continuously.
KR : In today’s media-saturated world, designers should aim to present their work in a way that stands out from the crowd. It’s important to highlight what makes your design unique, focusing on its distinct features and innovative aspects. By doing so, you capture attention and make a lasting impact in a competitive landscape.
KR : My next design project will likely be sunglasses, something I’ve been excited to explore. Expect a collection that combines innovation with style, focusing on both functionality and aesthetics. I’m looking forward to pushing boundaries in eyewear design and creating something unique that reflects my vision and design philosophy.
KR : My ultimate goal as a designer is to create meaningful, impactful designs that improve people’s lives while pushing the boundaries of creativity. I want my work to seamlessly blend functionality and beauty, ensuring that it solves real-world problems while providing a delightful experience for users. I aim to create designs that stand the test of time, combining innovation with sustainability, and contributing to a more responsible and efficient future. Additionally, I hope to inspire and mentor the next generation of designers, sharing my experiences and helping them grow. Ultimately, my goal is to leave a lasting mark on the design world through my creations and influence.
KR : As an esteemed designer, people expect creativity, innovation, and a keen understanding of functionality. They look for solutions that address real-world problems while also offering aesthetic value. Clients and colleagues expect high standards, attention to detail, and the ability to deliver projects that align with both their vision and practical needs. There's also an expectation of adaptability, staying current with trends and technology while maintaining a unique design identity that stands out in the industry.
KR : I belive that good design makes people happier, look at the fun parks that have e great design, kids love them, great architecture makes greater living spaces, good designs start conversations.
KR : I’m currently working on a completely new jewelry collection that I’m incredibly excited about. This project allows me to explore fresh design concepts and materials, aiming to create pieces that truly stand out. I’m focusing on a balance of innovative shapes, textures, and functionality while ensuring that each piece tells a unique story. I’m also incorporating sustainability into the design process, using ethically sourced materials. The goal is to create jewelry that is not only beautiful but also meaningful, resonating with people on a personal level. It’s a challenge, but I’m eager to see the final result.
KR : One of the design projects that has given me the most satisfaction is my latest sneaker design, which has already earned seven prestigious design awards. This project was particularly rewarding because it allowed me to push the boundaries of both form and function, blending innovative materials with cutting-edge design techniques. Seeing the sneaker resonate with both consumers and industry experts was incredibly fulfilling. The recognition and awards have validated my creative process and reinforced my belief in taking risks with new ideas. What makes it even more satisfying is knowing that the design is not only appreciated for its aesthetics but also for its functionality and comfort, making it a successful, well-rounded product.
KR : I believe that 3D printing has the potential to revolutionize design, making great products more accessible to the masses. It allows for innovative designs to be produced at a lower cost, which can be shared more widely. Designers benefit from this process through licensing, enabling them to be compensated while creating designs that contribute to a better, more efficient society. This shift could make high-quality, sustainable design available to more people.
KR : The time it takes to finalize a design project varies depending on the product. Some projects come together in just a few hours, while others may take up to a year. The complexity and scale of the design, along with the level of refinement required, influence how long the process takes.
KR : My life motto as a designer is to always stay curious and never stop learning. Design is an evolving field, and it's essential to embrace change, adapt to new technologies, and constantly challenge oneself. I believe that great design is about solving problems in unique ways and pushing boundaries. It’s also about staying true to your vision while being open to feedback. Every mistake is an opportunity to grow, and every success is a reminder to keep pushing forward. Above all, design should inspire and make a positive impact, whether through aesthetics, functionality, or the user experience.
KR : I believe it’s a dynamic relationship where design both sets and is influenced by trends. In many fields, designers push boundaries, creating new ideas that shape trends. At the same time, trends emerge from cultural, technological, and social shifts, influencing the direction of design. It’s a constant back-and-forth, where innovative designs often spark new trends, while trends provide context and direction for the design process.
KR : Technology plays an essential role in turning my designs into reality, but the creative process always begins in my mind. I first envision the concept, focusing on the core idea, functionality, and aesthetics. Once I have a clear vision, I use design software to bring that concept to life, refining it and enhancing the details. While technology helps to materialize the design, it is the initial inspiration and creativity that drives the entire process from start to finish.
KR : I use a variety of tools in my design process, including CAD for precision, Photoshop for visual refinement, and Winner for 3D modeling. Additionally, I work with a 3D printer to prototype designs and rely on my traditional workshop for hands-on work. This combination allows me to create both digital and physical prototypes.
KR : Color, materials, and ambiance are essential elements in design, as they greatly influence both aesthetics and functionality. I love exploring various colors and materials, constantly seeking innovative ways to incorporate them into my work. When I discover a material that hasn't been used in a specific design and it enhances the outcome, it’s an incredibly rewarding experience. The right combination can elevate a design, creating a unique and impactful result that resonates with users on both an emotional and practical level.
KR : When I see a great new design or product, I immediately focus on how the designers have solved problems, especially if the product is complex. I’m intrigued by the thought process behind the design choices, the functionality, and how different elements come together to create something both innovative and practical. It’s always exciting to see new solutions to old challenges.
KR : I developed my skills as a designer through a combination of hands-on experience, constant curiosity, and learning from both successes and failures. Lacking formal education in design, I relied on my passion to explore new ideas, experiment with materials, and study the work of other designers. I’ve always believed in learning by doing, so I constantly challenged myself with diverse projects, from lighting to furniture to fashion. Each experience taught me something valuable, and over time, my skills evolved. The key has been embracing mistakes as opportunities for growth and pushing myself to stay innovative, creative, and adaptable in every project.
KR : If I could meet anyone, regardless of time and space, I would choose Le Corbusier. His influence on modern architecture and design is profound, and I deeply admire his innovative approach to urban planning, functionality, and aesthetics. I would love to discuss his vision for the future of design, how he balanced form and function, and how he approached the relationship between design and society. Le Corbusier’s ability to think beyond his time and challenge traditional boundaries is something that continues to inspire me, and I believe a conversation with him would provide invaluable insights into design's potential to shape the future.
KR : The awards and recognition I’ve received over the years have opened numerous doors for me, helping to further my career and connect with others in the industry. While fame may seem daunting to some, I don’t find it difficult. The real reward comes from the recognition and respect I receive from the people I meet along the way. It’s incredibly satisfying to know that my work has made an impact, and the positive feedback from peers and collaborators is what truly motivates me to continue pushing the boundaries of design.
KR : As a designer, nothing makes my day more than seeing people use my products. It's incredibly rewarding to witness how my work is integrated into daily life and positively impacts others. That moment of connection with the user fuels my passion and motivation to continue designing. It reminds me that my creations are not just concepts, but real-world solutions that bring value and joy to people. This constant feedback drives me to push the boundaries of design and strive for excellence in every project.
KR : As a child, it wasn't immediately obvious that I would become a designer, but my natural curiosity and love for shapes, structures, and how things worked around me definitely laid the foundation. I was always fascinated by technical drawings, architecture, and the way products were designed. While I didn't know then that design would be my profession, I was constantly exploring, creating, and learning from the world around me. My passion for detail, functionality, and aesthetics developed organically, and over time, it became clear that design was my true calling, even without formal education.
KR : Looking a thousand years into the future, I believe design will continue to evolve in incredible ways, driven by technology and the need to address global challenges. We will see even more seamless integration of AI and machine learning in design processes, creating highly personalized and efficient products. Sustainability will be a central focus, with design solutions addressing climate change and resource depletion. Materials will be entirely biodegradable, and 3D printing might become the norm, allowing for instant production. I also foresee environments becoming more interactive, with smart architecture that responds to human needs. Ultimately, the future will hold designs that not only look beautiful but enhance quality of life and promote environmental well-being in ways we can only imagine today.
