Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Egwin Wilterdink ("EW") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

EW : Education:Junior Art Direction, Amsterdam and Graphic Designer, Zwolle both in the Netherlands

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

EW : When i was i child, i already liked to draw

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

EW : I choose to be a designer.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

EW : I often design online banners and user interfaces. What I like to design are, for example, complete walls of living rooms.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

EW : Just don't start directly, thirst think about youre design and possibilty's

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

EW : A great designer will first think before he / she starts immediately

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

EW : Balance in color / shape and material

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

EW : The value of good design is that you can enjoy it for years.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

EW : Posters or wall design

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

EW : To design my livng room, with own made posters.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

EW : Out of the box

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

EW : David Lachapelle

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

EW : Dutch advertisement, humor and style

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

EW : I think my silver award. I am very pleased with this.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

EW : Always looking at other designers, how they do it? Try to make a copy of it to testing yourself.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

EW : Store manager.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

EW : Design is enjoying the beautiful things, thinking about it, simplifying life in some cases.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

EW : Other beautifull designs

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

EW : By looking closely at other designers, sometimes trying to copy the techniques they use out of curiosity.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

EW : Always start a project immediately. Instead of thinking carefully about the possibilities.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

EW : 1 online platform

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

EW : Poster, in the future more packaging designs.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

EW : To sttill be happy with my work.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

EW : Quality and thinking along.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

EW : Through the right communication, or ask for a product.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

EW : I am working on some projects like a websitebanner and a advertisement

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

EW : The projects that i can do what i want

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

EW : 1 online platform/portfolio with all the designers. Less online design tools that creates brands. Less templates.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

EW : In some areas more and more tools on the internet that make it for you.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

EW : Normally an hour. bigger projects can be days

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

EW : Drawing and thinking

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

EW : Be happy with your work.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

EW : I think most of the time trends set the designs.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

EW : The role of technology becomes fine tools in the middle of the design process.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

EW : Pencil, Indesign, Illustrator, Photoshop

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

EW : Very important, color can make a good balance in the design

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

EW : How I came up with the idea.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

EW : Can i make that to?

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

EW : I believe in co-design

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

EW : I did't interacted other people.

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

EW : Dutch design

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

EW : Years to practise, curiosity and good looking around.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

EW : I would like to meet world famous musicians and jam with them.

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

EW : I am very honored with the 2 awards i won this year.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

EW : color; purple food; pizza, season;spring

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

EW : That a customer had given a paper with offers for an advertisement. Then I created an advertisement and sent it to the customer. The customer's response was: You have to scan the notes and that has to be printed.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

EW : To look around at other designers, motivated to make more beautifull things.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

EW : Yes, as a little child i was drawing. i liked also to work with colors.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

EW : Internet with more tools to design things for people just by clicking a vieuw buttons.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

EW : That you are really rewarded by hard work.
