LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer ่Juti Klipbua ("àK") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

àK : I was graduated from B.Arch. Assumption University, Bangkok, Thailand. Then work with Span Consultant Co.,Ltd., Bangkok, Thailand. Then move to Singapore to work with Designshop llp., Singapore. Then come back to Thailand to start my own design firm, JUTI architects.co.,ltd.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

àK : Forest and LEGO, I think, when I was young my father use to be electrical engineer in the mine deep in the forest. Spent time in the forest with the pure nature environment vs big mining equipment and vehicle inspired me a lot. Those day I play with LEGO and some crystal stone that my father bring out from the mine, also inspired me regarding to form, and shape.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

àK : Forced by my nature, I would say.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

àK : Architecture and interior design. Also some furniture design.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

àK : Don't give up and be open mind. I suggest to travel more and learn from natural environment.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

àK : Responsibility, I think great designer have to think carefully about how to use material, effect of your design to user ,environment context, and environmental concern.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

àK : Good design define itself by user experience, no need and explanation.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

àK : Invest in good design is investing in your quality of life, so why not...

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

àK : I would love to design The Memorial and museum for the late King RAMA 9

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

àK : My sketch book

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

àK : Tadao Ando and Louis I Khan

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

àK : Church of Light by Tadao Ando. It is the place where you can define emptiness and silence.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

àK : The first house I design as my parent vacation house when i was 19. Every time I revisit, its still give me energy and sense of exploration.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

àK : Learn from your mistake and seek the beauty side of your suffering.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

àK : Music producer and Dj

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

àK : Seeking a better world both for human being and environment.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

àK : My parent, my family, my wife, and my friend

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

àK : Practice a lot and learn to fail a lot too but don't give up

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

àK : to find the right client

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

àK : The have to believe in what they do, and what the think. Make it clear for the client. But flexible to improve their design from anothers feedback.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

àK : Resort and Casino in Myanmar.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

àK : Design a public space that elevate people life quality.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

àK : They may expect me to create something they never experience before.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

àK : I think design play an important role to elevate people life quality. Good design can improve standard of living and also giving aesthetics of living which lead to a better and more practical society.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

àK : Resort and Casino in Myanmar.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

àK : Mary Help of Christian Church, this is the first project that I can fully deliver abstract concept to be final product.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

àK : More local heritage been bring out or develop into design industry by new technology.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

àK : More personalize, more tailor made.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

àK : 6-20 months

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

àK : Get to know the client and site context.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

àK : Trust your sketch.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

àK : Depend of design field, for architecture, I think its a life long product. So I should be design not to follow the trend. But to have character of its own.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

àK : More like post production of design process. But plan to use technology more to explore space and pattern while design process more in future.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

àK : sketch-up and revit

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

àK : Color, material and ambient are the important role to design an architecture. They can give sense of place in direction that designer want to the space to perform.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

àK : What is the next one?

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

àK : Damm how they come up with that...

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

àK : Yes, for me still seeking for design-partner to share, debut, and improve our studio and idea.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

àK : Client and craft man.

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

àK : Conversations with students, Tadao Ando, Louis I. Khan, Rem Koolhass.

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

àK : Learn from visiting another architecture, learn from the way they create space, use of natural light, use of material, and structure...etc A lot of sketch of natural form and structure.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

àK : Tadao Ando

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

àK : I think I still away from called "Famous"

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

àK : Black color, Church of light by Tadao Ando, Som-tum ( Thai papaya salad), raining season, sketch book and vinyl record, Technic (turn table)

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

àK : After long presentation preparing, we go to the wrong day!! (one day in advance)

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

àK : Project Delivery day, after a long construction process. You have like 1-2 hrs while your walking through and touch the finished, experience your building, see it come to actual reality. Then after that its not belong to you anymore, its belong to owner.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

àK : Passion in LEGO and how I enjoy the nature, I guess.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

àK : No more human.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

àK : Thank you for interesting in my design. I will try to continue my archi life journey in searching for simplicity elegant kind of building more.
