LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Tommaso Petrillo ("TP") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

TP : Sono diplomato alla scuola Artistica, appassionato di geometria e modellistica. Ho realizzato plastici architettonici e riproduzioni mussali per molti anni, ho studiato, approfondito e sperimentato diverse tecniche di progettazione e con materiali differenti. Da circa 15 anni il plexiglas è il materiale che più utilizzo nei miei progetti, questo mi ha portato ad avere una grande esperienza in questo settore.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

TP : La progettazione è stata per me sempre fonte di crescita, non posso dire quando sono diventato un designer in quanto da sempre creo oggetti, complementi e progetti nuovi, sia per me che per i clienti che mi contattano. La motivazione è la mia passione.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

TP : E’ stato naturale, non sono stato costretto e non l’ho scelto, mi sento un uomo di creatività.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

TP : Disegno cose differenti, non ho un preciso oggetto. Quello che nasce nella mia testa cerco di renderlo reale.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

TP : Avere passione per la geometria, documentarsi e soprattutto girare il mondo.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

TP : E’ fondamentale il problem solving, la conoscenza dei materiali e le attrezzature per le loro lavorazioni, infine saper mettersi in discussione durante la fase progettuale.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

TP : Valuto l’utilità, l’aspetto estetico e quello cromatico.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

TP : Possedere un oggetto di buon design soddisfa il desiderio di godere della sua vista.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

TP : Non so rispondere a questa domanda, le mie idee nascono da desideri ed ispirazioni, non sono programmabili.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

TP : Al momento il progetto dei miei sogni è MIA, in seguito sicuramente ci saranno nuovi sogni da realizzare.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

TP : Essere libero di esprimere la mia creatività, non c’è ingrediente migliore.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

TP : Philippe Starck, Achille Castiglioni, Zaha Hadid.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

TP : Il progetto “Sciangai” di Zanotta, “Juicy Salif “ di Starck, “Arco” di Castiglioni, tutti per il materiali scelti, il design e l’utilità.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

TP : La lampada MIA ovviamente, il supporto che illuminandosi diventa parte integrante della lampada

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

TP : Non mi sono mai fermato, studio, osservo, creo prototipi, mi confronto.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

TP : L’architetto.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

TP : Il design è per me l’espressione di se stessi.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

TP : Le persone a me care. tutte in modi diversi, mi hanno sostenuto, aiutato e supportato.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

TP : Le esperienze lavorative, le passioni e la mia caparbietà.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

TP : Trovare il modo giusto per esprimere e creare il mio progetto, averlo in testa e trovare i giusti materiali ed il metodo per realizzarlo.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

TP : Con un prototipo il più veritiero possibile.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

TP : L’uso del plexiglas nel mondo del bijoux.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

TP : Lasciare un segno del proprio passaggio in questa vita.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

TP : Che possa continuare a creare design originali e che donino emozioni.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

TP : La bellezza è sempre fonte di una vita migliore e credo che il design debba realizzare bellezza.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

TP : All’uso del plexiglas nel mondo del bijoux.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

TP : Sicuramente la lampada MIA. E’ frutto di una idea molto personale e vederla riconosciuta in questa manifestazione mi dona notevole soddisfazione.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

TP : Nulla, credo che il design sia di per se un cambiamento naturale e continuo.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

TP : Verso la sostenibilità.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

TP : Non c’è un tempo definito, mediamente dai 3 ai sei mesi.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

TP : Da una matita e da un foglio.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

TP : “Crederci sempre, arrendersi mai”.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

TP : E’ fondamentale, soprattutto nella fase realizzativa.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

TP : Modellazione 3D in particolare come Rhinoceros, software grafici e taglio a fresa e laser.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

TP : Fondamentale!

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

TP : Come sono riuscito a sviluppare una lampada che fosse interamente illuminata partendo da un modello che può apparire classico ovvero un cilindro ed un supporto.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

TP : Tutto il lavoro che c’è dietro.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

TP : Il committente per me è un partner ideale.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

TP : Tutte le persone mi donano una parte di se, non ho un riferimento specifico ma volevo rendere omaggio alla figura femminile, ho due figlie.

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

TP : Leggo moltissimo, ma come ho detto anche prima, tutto ciò che leggo o gli incontri che faccio sono ingredienti che si mescolano e mi aiutano a crescere.

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

TP : Con lo studio e l’esperienza.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

TP : Con Leonardo da Vinci.

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

TP : Parecchio, per me è una nuova esperienza.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

TP : L’azzurro, il posto è in riva al mare, l’anguria, l’estate, la cosa preferita è una macchia e la marca è la Land Rover.

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

TP : Ho tanti episodi divertenti, faccio il mio lavoro con passione e ascolto musica che mi ispira e motiva. Non ho un episodio singolo.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

TP : Alzarmi presto e andare a vedere il mare.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

TP : No, volevo fare l’architetto.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

TP : Penso al presente ed ai passi che posso fare per contribuire ad un futuro migliore.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

TP : Sono Tommaso e questo mi basta, ti ripropongo il mio motto “Crederci sempre!”.
