Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Himanshu Shekhar Soni ("HSS") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

HSS : I pursued a Master's in Design at IIT Kanpur, India, driven by my love and passion for design. Although I was initially on the path to become a Mechanical Engineer, one pivotal interaction with a senior colleague changed my course. I looked at him and thought to myself, 'I will never be as excited about engineering as he is.' From that moment on, all I could envision was a monotonous, gray future with an adding machine permanently attached to my fingertips. This realization led me to explore Industrial Design, where I discovered my true aspiration to become a designer.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

HSS : As designers, we often identify ourselves with our work. It’s not just a job; it’s who we are. This deep connection fuels an endless source of passion. When we know that our work can solve a significant problem, we become unstoppable. A precise understanding of the issue allows us to stay laser-focused, and this focus becomes the driving force behind our ultimate design motivation.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

HSS : It was a natural progression for me to become a designer. I have loved painting and beautiful things since I was a child. When I started my engineering studies, I wanted to combine my artistic talents with my engineering skills. This led me to research Industrial Design, and without hesitation, I chose design as my path.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

HSS : As an industrial designer, I focus on creating products that are not only functional but also enhance the user experience through thoughtful form and intuitive design. I’m particularly interested in designing products that address real-world problems, improve everyday life, and are environmentally sustainable. I wish to design more products that are user-centered, with a focus on ergonomic, sustainable, and innovative solutions. Whether it's consumer electronics, home appliances, or tools, I aim to create designs that blend aesthetic appeal with practical functionality, always keeping the user’s needs and the environment in mind.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

HSS : Gain experience and understand how the design and technical development processes take a product from a raw sketch to a prototype, then to production. Listen to yourself and believe that you are capable of anything. Work harder than anyone to develop the necessary skills and always strive to raise the bar in everything you do.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

HSS : I believe great designers don't simply think about consumers—they think about people, their desires, aspirations, and challenges. They envision how these will evolve in the short, medium, and long term, staying connected with emerging trends and leveraging forecasting intelligence. Unlike those who merely speculate, great designers use these insights to actively shape the future, bending it toward their vision.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

HSS : Good design, or truly great design, is like a delicious dish cooked with the right balance of essential ingredients, adjusting both qualitative and quantitative variables to achieve the perfect outcome. Similarly, in design, it's about choosing the right solution for a particular situation—whether it's intuitive usability, user needs, awe-inspiring form, memorable experience, color harmony, or a flexible solution. Above all, the most essential ingredient is considering the contextual aspects in product design.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

HSS : The value of good design goes beyond just aesthetics; it creates meaningful experiences that improve functionality, solve problems, and make life easier. Good design enhances usability, builds emotional connections with users, and fosters brand loyalty. It is an investment that can increase efficiency, reduce costs in the long term, and ensure products or services stand out in a competitive market. Whether in business, technology, or consumer products, good design is essential for driving innovation, attracting customers, and improving overall quality of life. Investing in good design ultimately leads to a stronger brand, higher customer satisfaction, and long-term success

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

HSS : If I had the time, I would focus on designing products that address real-world challenges and improve the quality of life for underserved communities. Specifically, I would design affordable, sustainable solutions in areas like healthcare, education, and accessibility. For example, I would create medical devices or assistive technologies that are both affordable and easy to use for people in remote or low-income areas. Additionally, I would design tools to improve access to education, especially in rural areas, where resources are limited. The goal would be to create designs that not only serve functional needs but also empower individuals, making a positive impact on their lives and communities.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

HSS : My dream project would be to design a product like a perfume that evokes a deep emotional connection through sensory experiences—touch, feel, and smell. I envision creating a fragrance line with a unique packaging design that invites users to interact with the product on multiple levels, from the tactile feel of the bottle to the scent that stimulates emotions and memories. The design would focus on crafting an immersive experience, with textures that enhance the physical interaction and scents that trigger specific moods or memories. This project would combine the power of emotional design with sensory engagement, creating a product that not only smells beautiful but also touches the user in a personal and memorable way.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

HSS : Working with beautiful materials, paying meticulous attention to detail, focusing on the user experience, and showcasing the craftsmanship are the key ingredients of my designs. It is the thoughtful combination of all these elements that sparks a deep emotional connection with the user. Each material is carefully selected to enhance the sensory experience, every detail is designed to create a sense of harmony, and the craftsmanship reflects the care and precision behind each product. When these aspects come together, they not only functionally and aesthetically pleasing designs, but also evoke emotions that resonate with the user, making the design feel personal and memorable.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

HSS : I am always inspired by the work of Philippe Starck and Stefano Giovannoni.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

HSS : I find Stefano Giovannoni's Magic Bunny, Cico Egg Cup, and Philippe Starck's Juicy Salif particularly captivating. I admire how their expressive designs skillfully play with symbols and metaphors, tapping into the subconscious. These objects transcend their functional purposes, offering a narrative quality that is both intriguing and thought-provoking. The way they merge art, design, and storytelling creates a deeper emotional connection with the user, making them not only visually striking but also conceptually rich.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

HSS : Although I have not yet designed it, my greatest design would be one that seamlessly blends functionality, aesthetic appeal, and emotional connection. It would be a product that not only solves a practical problem but also creates an experience that resonates with the user on a deeper level. The aspects that would make it great are its ability to engage multiple senses, its intuitive usability, and its lasting impact on the user's daily life. I would also focus on sustainability, ensuring that the design is both environmentally responsible and long-lasting. Ultimately, its greatness would lie in how it enhances the user experience, bringing both beauty and utility in a way that feels natural and meaningful.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

HSS : Always be willing to learn, explore new things, and embrace new challenges. Stay curious and approach situations and problems with an open, childlike mind, unconfined by rigidity or preconceived notions.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

HSS : If I hadn't become a designer, I likely would have pursued a career in engineering or the arts, as both fields deeply interest me. In engineering, I would have enjoyed solving complex problems and creating functional, innovative solutions. On the other hand, as an artist, I would have focused on expressing emotions and stories through visual forms. Ultimately, both paths share a common thread of creativity, problem-solving, and a desire to make a meaningful impact, whether through practical inventions or artistic expression.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

HSS : Design is an intentional and ongoing process of identifying opportunities for innovation and evaluation. For me, it’s all about problem-solving within the context of the user’s needs and environment. It’s not just about creating aesthetically pleasing products but understanding the deeper challenges the user faces and finding solutions that enhance their experience. This process involves continuous iteration, testing, and refinement to ensure that the final design is not only functional but also meaningful and relevant to the people it serves.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

HSS : Although I haven't reached that level yet, I’ve been fortunate to have several key supporters along the way. My biggest supporter has been my mentor, who guided me with invaluable advice and pushed me to explore new ideas. Additionally, my peers and colleagues have been a constant source of inspiration and encouragement, helping me to grow and stay motivated. I’ve also received tremendous support from my family, whose belief in my abilities has fueled my determination to pursue design. While I still have a long way to go, their guidance, encouragement, and constructive feedback have been crucial in my development as a designer.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

HSS : While I haven't reached the level of being a 'great designer' yet, what has helped me along the way is a combination of curiosity, continuous learning, and embracing challenges. My willingness to explore new ideas, try different design approaches, and learn from both successes and mistakes has been crucial. I’ve also benefited greatly from mentorship and feedback, which have provided me with valuable insights and helped me refine my skills. Additionally, my passion for understanding the user’s needs and staying connected to real-world problems has kept me motivated. I believe that being open to growth, staying persistent, and learning from every experience are key factors in my ongoing journey as a designer.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

HSS : Before I could even think of becoming a design master, I faced several obstacles that shaped my journey. One of the biggest challenges was overcoming self-doubt and learning to trust my own creative instincts. Early on, I struggled with finding my unique voice in design and understanding how to balance creativity with functionality. Another obstacle was navigating the steep learning curve of mastering various design tools and methodologies. In addition, managing time effectively between multiple projects and balancing design with other professional responsibilities was often difficult. However, each of these challenges became an opportunity for growth. With time, persistence, and a willingness to learn from my mistakes, I gradually turned these obstacles into stepping stones toward becoming a better designer.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

HSS : Designers should present their work by telling a compelling story, showcasing the thought process, research, and problem-solving behind it. The presentation should highlight how the design meets user needs, with clear visuals and prototypes to demonstrate functionality. Ultimately, it should inspire and inform, conveying both the process and the final outcome.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

HSS : My next design project will focus on creating a product that blends functionality with emotional connection. I aim to design something that not only solves a real-world problem but also resonates with users on a deeper level, engaging multiple senses. In the future, you can expect more projects that prioritize user-centered design, sustainability, and innovation, with a focus on creating meaningful, impactful experiences.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

HSS : my ultimate goal as a designer to create a meaningful design and add value. The product has to be visually inventive so that the user is intrigued to try it and then discovers the meaning in its form. But the best experience is when the user discovers the unexpected- something that challenged him/her, during its use. These discoveries, are what the user wants to share with others which in turn makes the product meaningful.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

HSS : People expect an esteemed designer to deliver thoughtful, innovative solutions that are both functional and aesthetically appealing. They look for designs that are user-centered, solving real problems while creating memorable experiences. Additionally, they expect high attention to detail, creativity, and the ability to think outside the box. Ultimately, people expect designs that make a positive impact and reflect a deep understanding of both the user and the broader context.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

HSS : The design stage is critical from the point of view of social responsibility. Design decisions impact production processes and often the content of the industrial waste. Effective design strategies anticipate growing environmental concerns and responsibilities, sustainable design to eliminate or minimize the negative environmental impact.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

HSS : I’m currently working on a project that blends functionality with sustainability, focusing on creating a product that not only solves a real problem but also has a minimal environmental impact. I’m excited about this because it allows me to explore innovative materials and technologies while staying true to my design principles of user-centricity and simplicity. It’s a great challenge, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it evolves.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

HSS : The design projects that have given me the most satisfaction are those where I was able to solve real user problems in a meaningful way. Projects that required deep research, empathy, and innovation to create solutions that were not only functional but also emotionally engaging. The satisfaction comes from seeing how these designs improve the user experience and make a positive impact, whether it's enhancing convenience, accessibility, or enjoyment.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

HSS : In the coming years, I would like to see the design industry place an even greater emphasis on sustainability and inclusivity. As societal and environmental challenges continue to evolve, design solutions must not only be cost-effective and user-centric but also environmentally responsible and adaptable to local contexts. I hope to see more designers prioritizing materials that are sustainable, processes that minimize waste, and designs that are accessible to diverse populations. Additionally, a stronger focus on collaboration across disciplines—integrating technology, social sciences, and other fields—could lead to more holistic and innovative solutions that better address the complex issues our world faces.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

HSS : I believe the design field is headed towards a more holistic and interdisciplinary approach. As technology continues to advance, we’ll see increased integration of AI, augmented reality, and other innovative tools that will transform how we create and interact with design. There will be a stronger focus on sustainability, with designers increasingly addressing environmental challenges and developing eco-friendly solutions. Additionally, user experience will become even more central, as designs become more personalized, inclusive, and accessible. The future of design will likely be shaped by the need for solutions that are not only functional but also socially responsible and contextually relevant to diverse audiences.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

HSS : The time to finalize a design project depends on its complexity, but typically ranges from a few weeks to several months. It involves stages like research, ideation, prototyping, and testing. While I aim to meet deadlines, I focus on ensuring the design is both functional and user-centered, which can sometimes extend the timeline.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

HSS : When starting a new design project, I begin with research to understand the problem, the user needs, and the context. This includes gathering insights through user feedback, market trends, and competitor analysis. From there, I move into ideation, exploring different solutions, and creating prototypes to test and refine the design. The key is to stay user-centered throughout the process, ensuring the final design is both effective and meaningful.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

HSS : My life motto as a designer is 'Design with purpose, create with empathy.' I believe that design should always serve a meaningful purpose, whether it’s solving a problem, improving lives, or creating an emotional connection. By staying empathetic to users’ needs and experiences, I aim to create designs that not only look good but also make a positive impact.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

HSS : I believe it's a dynamic relationship where both influence each other. Design often sets trends by pushing boundaries, introducing new ideas, and reflecting cultural shifts. At the same time, trends can inspire designers, guiding them toward what resonates with the current time and audience. Great design tends to be ahead of the curve, but it also takes inspiration from evolving trends to stay relevant and impactful.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

HSS : Technology is essential in my design process, enabling creativity, efficiency, and precision. It helps bring ideas to life through tools like 3D modeling and prototyping, while also facilitating user testing and collaboration. Ultimately, it allows me to create designs that are both functional and innovative

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

HSS : I primarily use design software like Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Coral draw) for graphic design and visual concepts. For 3D modeling and product design, I rely on tools like Creo, SolidWorks, and Rhino.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

HSS : Color, materials, and ambient play a vital role in design by enhancing the overall user experience. Color can evoke emotions, create visual harmony, and guide attention. The choice of materials influences the tactile experience, durability, and sustainability of a product. Ambient elements, such as lighting and sound, set the mood and can significantly impact how a design is perceived. Together, they create a cohesive and immersive experience that engages users on both an emotional and functional level.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

HSS : I wish people would ask about the story behind my design—why it exists, the problems it solves, and how it enhances the user experience. I want them to connect with the design’s purpose and understand its impact on their lives.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

HSS : When I see a new, great design or product, the first thing that comes to my mind is, 'Why didn’t I think of that?' It’s a mix of admiration for the creativity and simplicity, and a drive to push my own ideas further. It reminds me that great design often feels obvious once it's done, which inspires me to keep refining my own work.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

HSS : My ideal design partner is someone who shares a passion for innovation and challenges my ideas. I believe in co-design, as combining diverse perspectives leads to more impactful and meaningful solutions.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

HSS : My mentors, colleagues, and users have had the most influence on my design. Their feedback, diverse perspectives, and real-world insights have shaped my approach and helped me refine my design thinking. Collaboration with professionals from other fields has also broadened my understanding of design’s role in broader systems.

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

HSS : Books like The Design of Everyday Things by Don Norman and Change by Design by Tim Brown have had a significant impact on my design approach. They taught me the importance of user-centered design, problem-solving, and the power of design thinking. Creative Confidence by Tom Kelley also inspired me to embrace creativity and innovation in my work.

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

HSS : I developed my skills through a combination of continuous learning, hands-on experience, and seeking feedback from mentors and peers. I stayed curious, exploring new techniques and tools while constantly challenging myself with diverse projects. Over time, I learned to embrace failure as part of the process, refining my approach and understanding of user needs, which helped me grow as a designer.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

HSS : I would like to meet Nicola Tesla, Michelangelo and Picasso.

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

HSS : I’m grateful for the awards and recognition I’ve received, but I see them as a reflection of the hard work and collaboration behind each project. They motivate me to continue growing and pushing my boundaries. As for fame, it’s not something I actively seek; my focus remains on creating meaningful designs. The recognition is appreciated, but it’s the impact of the work that truly matters to me.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

HSS : My favorite color is blue, as it feels calming and versatile. My favorite place is the beach, where I find inspiration and peace. I love Italian food, especially pasta, for its simplicity and flavor. My favorite season is autumn, with its warm colors and crisp air. As for things, I enjoy collecting design books that inspire me. My favorite brand is Apple, for its innovative and user-centered design philosophy.

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

HSS : One funny memory I have as a designer was during a project where I was working on a prototype that had to fit perfectly in a specific space. After days of refining and adjusting, I proudly presented it to the client. They took one look at it, smiled, and casually mentioned, 'Oh, I was thinking of a bigger space.' I had spent all that time perfecting it for a space that didn’t even match the actual dimensions! It was a reminder to always double-check the details, no matter how confident I feel about the design.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

HSS : feedback from client and identifying or solving any problem makes my day great, this is what Extend my thinking and revolve my thinking more closely and keep me motivated.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

HSS : As a child, I was always drawn to creating things—whether it was making art out of junk, experimenting with sand art, or drawing. I loved the idea of turning everyday materials into something new and beautiful. While I didn’t know at the time that I would become a designer, my early fascination with colors, textures, and problem-solving definitely laid the foundation for my creative path. Looking back, those playful explorations were the start of my journey into design, even if I didn't realize it then!

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

HSS : Looking a thousand years ahead, I imagine technology and design will have evolved in ways we can’t yet grasp, solving major challenges like sustainability. While the tools and methods will change, I believe the core principles of design—problem-solving, empathy, and innovation—will remain timeless, shaping a better future.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

HSS : Although I may not have a fan base, I’d like people to know that my approach to design is always centered around creating practical, user-focused solutions. I’m passionate about continuously learning and growing as a designer, always striving to improve my craft. My designs are influenced by empathy, creativity, and a deep curiosity about how things work. Ultimately, I want my work to have a positive impact on the world and solve real problems for the people who use it.
