Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Miltz ("Miltz") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.
Miltz : At first, I wanted to be a profession to make something. However, something was not decided. Illustrator, industrial designer, technician, everything was good. I was looking for a place where I could demonstrate my own creativity. I thought that the profession of making things would be worth living in life. Also, I wanted independence soon. I wanted an environment to judge things at my own risk without being influenced by anyone. After graduating from high school, I entered a vocational school and studied graphic design. I worked for production for four years and became freelance.
Miltz : To one of the fun things in design work,There are orders from clients outside my knowledge and experience. That will lead to the spread of knowledge. Also, I like to trick people in a nice sense. At a vocational school, I received an advertisement seminar and refined my skills to move people's minds with visuals and copies. Since then, I read several brain science books to move the emotions of many unspecified people. It is a pleasant move to move people's movements with your own creations. And there are almighty skills such as design · illustration · photo technique · movie production · planning. I think that those skills are suitable for the occupation of the designer.
Miltz : I hoped to be an architect at high school. However, I did not go on that path. After graduating from high school, I planned to enter the vocational school and become an illustrator. However, I thought that learning graphic design rather than learning illustrations and using that knowledge to illustration is more efficient. Later on I met advertising production, I became a graphic designer, not an illustrator, got a job at a production company.
Miltz : In client work, companies and service logos are often created and deployed to Web and print tools. I am good at graphic design with typography as the main axis.
Miltz : Make something that can not be copied. It can be a new design style or an analog work. Someone already makes ordinary works. Continue and update works that can not be copied. It becomes strong originality and becomes your cultural work.
Miltz : A good designer thinks of a person who can shape the visual that fits the image. A wonderful designer can think about something other than design. For example, teammates, clients, families of clients, their families, their commercial effectiveness, their own stance and branding, etc. A wonderful designer for me is not to believe in the power of design. I do not believe the power of design in the same way.
Miltz : It is the same as the above contents, A wonderful design is superior to other aspects. It is thought until the behavior after seeing the design and the impression of the memory of the time not touched.
Miltz : Good design is one that does not require design. Or what is designed to do so. You should invest in essence before investing in design.
Miltz : I want to do research on lines with originality. It is typography and a picture. People who made stripes, borders, polka dots are very respectable. I also want to create such a form of concept.
Miltz : I would like to open a solo exhibition with traditional Japanese shrines and temples when the number of works is about 20 or more. Through such places I'd like to feel my work and the way leading to Japanese gods and Buddha. Typography with people as a canvas. I want to leave a dynamic work with a movement change. Also they are male and female expressions of lines are different, and by intersection like a dance, I imagine a combination of curves and straight lines into a single work. Drawing on a huge glass building. Different overlapping lines are one of the features of the work. I'd like to reproduce it as a more stereoscopic combination with a glass of huge buildings. I also want to create a space where I will be present in overlapping lines.
Miltz : Heart envying people.
Miltz : -Japanese sake, Masamune's kanji logo -Numerous "Hihakutai (splashed brushstrokes)" of Kukai. -It is slightly different from typography, calligraphy of VINCENT ABADIE HAFEZ and RETNA
Miltz : Same as above. They have their own lines. I think it is a stronger communication tool than any self-introduction.
Miltz : I never felt it was the best design. Because when I make the completed work again, I have the consciousness that I can make something with a higher quality than at the beginning. Because it looks like a design like a rusted failed work in a week as if such a feeling. But I can make another creation to remove that feeling. For this reason I may say that the latest work I made is the best. Currently my latest work is "KANJI-LINE: HATOUUNSAN". https://www.behance.net/gallery/64026575/KANJI-LINEHATOUUNSAN
Miltz : I touch many things other than design. In particular, I recommend you to read books of philosophy, sociology, brain science a little.
Miltz : I am an art teacher, an illustrator, a cartoonist, a freetater, a salesman.
Miltz : What is design? 1 Thinking the root of things 2 Optimizing 3 Make up and choose clothes 4 Try making rules I think that this is one of them.
Miltz : My wife and my family. Or an old client. Team mate of the previous production.
Miltz : I am not a great designer, so not know. Believe in the power of design, let's do a lot of work under a great designer.
Miltz : Balancing of orders for living and personal work for expressing themselves. The problem is still alive now.
Miltz : In order to confirm the evaluation from around, I think that it is good to see the situation first at the web. After being evaluated to a certain extent, we will make a product that is worthy of the real thing and open up a solo exhibition. Also record the process and landscape and summarize it on the web. It diffuses with SNS etc. around the portfolio site.
Miltz : Skateboard series. Or Dalma series. Please do not expect.
Miltz : Live life only by what I want to make.
Miltz : A more simple environment. The world where mediation is lost.
Miltz : Design is also to make concepts. I think that if people who can move society gains knowledge of design, the world will become better. Our designers should make the design more permeable to such people to gain design knowledge.
Miltz : nothing special
Miltz : For the same reason as question 14, I may say that the latest work I made is the best. Currently my latest work is "KANJI-LINE: HATOUUNSAN". https://www.behance.net/gallery/64026575/KANJI-LINEHATOUUNSAN
Miltz : I do not think so much. I would like to produce something that is not affected by changes in the design industry as much as possible.
Miltz : I think that design becomes general education and that designers who can instruct designs quickly become important.
Miltz : This artwork seems to be about a week.
Miltz : When there is time I will leave it for three days while keeping it at the head. Then write down small thumbnails in the notebook.
Miltz : Not buy a person's favor. I will return it as soon as I buy it. Send incentives to people. I want not return.
Miltz : Of course I think that it may be set. If you are seeking trends it is natural to do so. but, It is also important to explore possibilities other than trends. Some Nobody can make a trend. I think that there may be a design that follows the trend.
Miltz : Improve design efficiency. Or extension of output.
Miltz : iPad pro, Macbook pro, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Aftereffects, paper & brush
Miltz : Color determines the impression. Materials decide quality. ambiment decides the viewer.
Miltz : I do not like the explanation of the meaning of my design, so I want you to imagine the meaning.
Miltz : What kind of process did you produce? How many designers were involved? How was the budget constructed?
Miltz : I believe there are many wonderful designs born from co-design. but, I am thinking that I do not need a partner for now as it is suitable for producing by one person.
Miltz : Chinese philosopher, Zhuang-zi.
Miltz : Zhuang-zi. Numerous books written by Yuji Ikegaya, a Japanese brain scholar.
Miltz : I will acquire new skills to fill skills I can not do. When there are a better designer than yourself, calculate whether you can reach that person's level by the age of the person. If I was a young designer I will forget.
Miltz : I would like to discuss with my father who died before I became a designer.
Miltz : This is my first big prize and I have not realized it yet. I do not feel much because I did not have much knowledge of this award. I think it is difficult to become famous and I am not yet famous.
Miltz : My favorite colors are white, black, gold, red, blue. The place is my house. Especially desk. Ethnic food. I like all the seasons. Things, especially none. Brand, adidas.
Miltz : Sending quotation will stop replying to emails.
Miltz : I drink Red Bull and listen to the game and animation soundtrack. Then hands move naturally.
Miltz : I grew up in a country where I was not involved in the occupation of a designer, so it was not clear. But I liked to make various things. Although it is not necessarily a designer, the possibility of becoming some creators may have been high.
Miltz : It is easier to imagine a future that is darker than a bright future. That may be due to the current situation in Japan. Our children and others want a happy future.
Miltz : nothing special
