LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Andrejs Nadezdinskis ("AN") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

AN : I do not have a design education, one could say that I am self-taught designer, my education is technical, bet my spirit always also strives for art. My design helped me to unite both - art and technologies.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

AN : Nature was my biggest inspiration for my artwork, I wanted to save its beauty for centuries.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

AN : It was my own free will to design this work, I believe that one should follow his heart and inspiration at any time.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

AN : I like to design unique works with lasting value, to find new paths and challenges.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

AN : I do not consider a design legend, but my advice would be to never be afraid to express yourself and make your visions a reality, please also keep in mind that every design should have a meaning behind it in my humble opinion.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

AN : Probably good execution, unique idea and will to finish what one has started and never to give up, facing first challenges.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

AN : Good design should also be with great meaning behind it, paying attention to all details, no matter how small they are.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

AN : Good design lasts for centuries and also stays as a testimony of a current era.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

AN : I focus on details and to make everything high quality, even it takes more time and effort.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

AN : I followed my inspiration and did not gave up when I met some difficulties, it took many tries, but it was worth it. You can always improve yourself and your works.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

AN : Design is a symbiosis of art and technology, it is something that never loses its value.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

AN : My greatest obstacles were how to execute my idea technologically, this is why I created a special workroom-lab for my experiments.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

AN : Since my project is an artwork, then I think that an art gallery is the best place to exhibit my works.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

AN : I plan to make a full collection of my works and display them for bigger audience.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

AN : My ultimate goal is to create something unique, something that has never been done before, something that will last for centuries.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

AN : I would like to see that all designs are created with a deeper purpose and meaning.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

AN : Hard to say, but definitely somewhere exciting and new.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

AN : It took one and a half year to finish my design.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

AN : Technology pays the greatest role in my design, I could not achieve anything without it, special adaptations and equipment is a must have.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

AN : I use different equipment - some is self made, some is bought, some is rented.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

AN : I think everything of the above pays a great role, I believe that any artwork must be harmonious and unified, paying great attention to every detail. I like to work with noble metals and wood.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

AN : I believe it is possible to co-design, but it is important that both parties are on the same page and share the same vision. I work alone, so it is hard to say more.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

AN : I would like to meet and discuss with any professional in its field.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

AN : When I was little, I hope to achieve something and to leave something for next generations, with joy in my heart I can say that I achieved this goal and was not afraid to follow my inspiration.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

AN : I do not know, but I hope that future so far will only bring something great for all mankind.
