LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer BORD Architectural Studio Llc ("BASL") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

BASL : In fact I never had the intention to become one! As a child I started to draw my own house, and then I was told I can design it for real only in case I am an architect. My one and only goal was this and I planned to choose another profession after achieving it. Even when I started the Faculty of Architecture the possibility to design something for others seemed completely indifferent to me.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

BASL : Nor did I really choose, neither was forced - I started studying arcitecture only to design my own house, and then wanted to start something else. I decided only later that I really want to do this for my life.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

BASL : Our current projects vary from leisure and sport facilities, industrial buildings to offices and housing projects. I wish more multifunctional projects - the more complex needs it has to meet, the better for us. We like the challanges in such projects.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

BASL : The key is our sense of responsibility: as an architect it is crucial, as our design determine people's everyday life for decades. You can hang a painting into an other room, but what can you do with the room itself...?

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

BASL : Large-scale cultural buildings would be a dream to come true due to its complexity and communal aspects.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

BASL : All our projects have a different story, a guideline which provides a unique narrative or choreography for the building. This determines the concept, the main spatial system or the shape and volume. The story personalizes the design.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

BASL : As a young designer in my twenties, starting with our studio it was a big challange to compete with noted architects and larger studios for the projects. This was the most difficult of all.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

BASL : We have a few projects in parallel, however the biggest is the National Skating Centre of Hungary. It is a multifunctional facility with ice surfaces, swimming pool, offices and hotel on several floors. This complexity makes it really interesting for us.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

BASL : In the field of architecture a global design language is used nowadays. Developed and maintained by the quick global flow of information it is uniformed and less sensitive than it should be.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

BASL : I believe that the future of architecture is based on the individual needs of smaller communities, instead of the global design language used by everyone at the moment.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

BASL : As an architect it is quite a long term - 2 or 3 years usually, from the first concept till the clients start using it.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

BASL : Architecture - or design in general - depends mostly on psychology. If you are sensitive to the people you design for, then you are less likely to make mistakes.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

BASL : Technology and architecture are now closely related fields. Therefore we pursue honesty in our designs revealing technology and hide it as less as possible as it is a legit part of a building today. We design from the very beginning this way - starting from the A'Design Awarded Moonvalley winery.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

BASL : In our studio, all our architects are design partners. Everyone feels the project and the design their own and I think it is very important. However there are a few collegues considered as members of a group, called 'lifebelt', each able to substitute me in specific fields and decisions, supervising all the actual projects.

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

BASL : Development happens through our projects: we work on them and after they are built, we can learn the consequences. The more experience we have, the closer we get to the truth.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

BASL : The main motivation for me stands in the community of our studio. It might sound stereotypical, but keeping in pace all the collegues and maintain their well-being is the most important goal for every day.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

BASL : From the age of 10, I passionately started to design my own house. However I never thought I might become an architect and design for others than myself. Even when I started studying architecture, I was convinced I was going to do my own house and then choose another profession.
