LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Cecilia Pozzi ("CP") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

CP : I graduated in the three-year course of Interior Design at IED Milano (Istituto Europeo di Design, Milan, via A. Sciesa) in 2015. Here I developed an interest in Naval Design due to the collaboration with MONDOMARINE & HOT LAB. Subsequently, I attended a master’s degree course at ‘Politecnico di Milano’ that allowed me to specialise in Product Design.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

CP : I can't say why, I think it's something I've always had inside of me.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

CP : I chose to become a designer. My parents have always taught me to follow my dreams.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

CP : I don't have a preference, I really like designing everyday objects, like lamps or furniture in general. Objects that can fill spaces and make them unique.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

CP : so much diligence, and a lot of passion

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

CP : A great designer is the one who can see beyond.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

CP : I evaluate the design by the type of materials that are used. I believe we must always be on the cutting edge.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

CP : Good Design keeps your memorable brand. I believe, simply, that good design is good business, for everyone.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

CP : I don't know, I like to design for anyone who wants to make the spaces of his home unique and welcoming.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

CP : there are many, but my dream is to design my future house

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

CP : calm, imagination, and think before acting

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

CP : Achille Castiglioni, Cesare Leonardi, Vico Magistretti, Angelo Mangiarotti, Alessandro Mendini, Ettore Sottsass, Zaha Hadid, Le Corbusier

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

CP : the ribbon chair by Cesare Leonardi and Franca Stagi lc4 and lc1 by Le Corbusier I like them because they are an example of an endless design

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

CP : my BEING lamp I think is fantastic because from a simple trunk I made a lamp that with its cuts can make an environment with a unique light.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

CP : I have not done anything in particular, I am simply myself

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

CP : if I had not become a designer I would have become a doctor.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

CP : For me design is imagination, innovation and simplicity

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

CP : My biggest supporters are my parents.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

CP : Hard work and patience

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

CP : The biggest obstacle that I am still facing is the crisis that exists in Italy, the world of design feels it a lot.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

CP : With pride. I believe that being proud of one's work is the basis.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

CP : now I don't know. I'm very young, I still have many dreams to realize.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

CP : open my design studio.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

CP : Unique and particular projects

DL: How does design help create a better society?

CP : Design, if done well, takes great care of the environment, we must try to design thinking about what surrounds us: the earth

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

CP : I'm working on making the being lamp

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

CP : Many design projects gave me satisfaction, but especially the two who won the A' design award. Because it was a great test.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

CP : I would like there to be more attention to nature and the world

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

CP : I hope in America

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

CP : depends on the extent of the project.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

CP : I start from the concept and then proceed with the realization of the design, but we must always have an inspiration

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

CP : believe in yourself

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

CP : I think design is defining trends.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

CP : The role of technology is very important in the design. Because the world is in constant discovery and also the design of keeping up with new technologies.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

CP : I use many softwear: Autocad 2D, 3DS Max Design, Rhinoceros and I have experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign, up to the latest versions.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

CP : The role of color and materials in design is essential.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

CP : I like to tell where I get inspiration from.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

CP : When I see a new design or a new product, I immediately think about what materials were used and the production process and where the inspiration comes from

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

CP : I believe a lot in co-design, I already have a partner in some of the projects, she is a former college friend of mine: Diana Stefania Rumbolà

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

CP : My parents and my boyfriend. I am very attentive to the opinions of the people I love

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

CP : No one in particular

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

CP : I don't consider myself a master designer yet.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

CP : I would like to speak with the Corbusier, Castiglioni, Mendini and many others, but above all I would like to see them while they are planning

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

CP : I'm not so famous, and I consider myself a very modest person.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

CP : Color: white place: Sardinia season: summer but also winter thing: the cups for coffee, I collect them brand: none in particular.

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

CP : there are a lot of fun moments in the design, especially if it's done in a team. When you're tired, the laugh of a team member (friend) is always what you need to keep going

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

CP : coffee makes me happy; no I'm joking, what motivates me are my dreams.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

CP : I never imagined becoming a good designer.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

CP : The future is a mystery. I like to imagine it always different.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

CP : I like to see things work. I would call myself ‘eternal enthusiastic’. I like to carry my job in my interests and my interests in my job. The great love for design has led me to specialise my career increasingly in furniture product. I always try to cultivate my curiosity.

HER PERSONAL INTERESTS ARE VARIOUS, SHE PARTICULARLY LIKES THE ASPECTS OF THE (ARTISTIC) EXPRESSION, DESIGN AND COMMUNICATION, AND SHE ALWAYS TRY TO CULTIVATE HER CURIOSITY. SHE LIKES TO SEE THINGS WORK. SHE THINKS THAT WORK PLAYS A FUNDAMENTAL ROLE IN HER LIFE. A LARGE PART OF THE EXISTENCE OF EVERY INDIVIDUAL IS OCCUPIED BY THIS REALITY AND FOR THIS REASON, THE IDEAL IS TO WORK WITH ENTHUSIASM AND SATISFACTION, WITH PEOPLE WHO BELIEVE IN WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND WHO ARE WILLING TO LEARN CONSTANTLY.
