LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Dimitrije Davidovic ("DD") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

DD : I come from an artistic family, most family members are engaged in art and design. I attended the Art School in Nis, the direction for interior and industrial design. After that I enter the Belgrade Polytechnic and the direction of product design.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

DD : I am inspired by people. I want to create beautiful products that will make life easier for people.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

DD : I chose to be forced.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

DD : I design everything. I would not want to limit myself to anything. I swim through various areas.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

DD : I am not legend. I am a normal human being with a little talent and a lot of work. I would advise them to do a lot for themselves.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

DD : A good designer is talented, an great designer works a lot.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

DD : A good design is moving in the head, it comes to the paper, then the digital one creates a really good design. The design that remains in the head is good, but when he sees the light of the day, then he becomes a really good design.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

DD : Why do people invest? To earn, of course. A good design will bring them money. That's why people invest in good design.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

DD : I do not know, I design for myself. I design for all people.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

DD : Dream. And while you are awake, dream.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

DD : I designed a lamp. It's a wall lamp with an inspiration in the eclipse of sun. Let the rest of the mystery remain.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

DD : Work and sleep. Like Leonardo Da Vinci.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

DD : I'd probably be a professional athlete. I've been dealing with professional sports for a long time.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

DD : Design is art. Art is design.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

DD : My biggest support is my family.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

DD : Learning about yourself.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

DD : The biggest obstacles in life are enviable people. They will do everything to get you out and be ahead of you.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

DD : Every designer must know everything about his design. Confidence is the best presentation.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

DD : I work on a new lamp, some ecological design etc.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

DD : My goal is to direct as many people as possible into the right way of design

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

DD : They expect top design.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

DD : Like art, the design is here to break everyday monotony in people.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

DD : I'm working on the design of a new sports rehabilitation device.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

DD : Design of my Eclipse lamp, a lot of people like that design and I am exhibiting at many regional exhibitions.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

DD : I would like to see more use of materials that do not harm the environment and whose production does not disturb the ecosystem.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

DD : It depends on the project and the inspiration. Sometimes the project can be done in a week, and sometimes it takes years.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

DD : Everything start in my head, I try not to look at similar projects, so as not to copy something, I like to create new things.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

DD : We are all designed from our birth, as we grow so we become art.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

DD : Design need to sets trends, design is trend.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

DD : We have to follow technology and use it.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

DD : It is the core of design, the design is the psychology of man. Psychology of color, shape and texture.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

DD : What is the inspiration for design.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

DD : I wonder: "How I did not think of that?"

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

DD : My friend Marija is my ideal design partner. Yes, but it must be chosen with great care.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

DD : All the people in my environment. I listen to their thoughts, problems, ideas ...

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

DD : Nikola Tesla. About everything. About space, time, pigeons...

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

DD : I wish them to follow heart, and buy good design, and of course to look at my work.

DIMITRIJE DAVIDOVIC IS A DESIGNER FROM SERBIA. HE GRADUATED AT ART SCHOOL IN NISH, AFTER WHICH WENT TO STUDY AT BELGRADE POLYTECHNIC ON INDUSTRIAL DESIGN SECTION. DIMITRIJE FINDS INSPIRATION IN THE NATURE. HE HAS A SOPHISTICATED DESIGN. HE WORKS FOR PEOPLE, NOT FOR THINGS. HIS DESIGN IS CREATIVE AND CONTROVERSIAL. DIMITRIJE EXPRESSES HIS CREATIVITY THROUGH THE DESIGN OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS AND INTERIORS. HE ALSO WORKS WITH PAINTING, DRAWING AND DOING AS WELL AS PHOTOGRAPHY. IN HIS FREE TIME, HE IS PRACTICING WATER POLO. HE IS STUDYING MARTIAL ARTS AS WELL AS TRAINING THEM. IT DEALS WITH ORGANIZING EVENTS, CONSULTING AND MARKETING. HE OCCASIONALLY HOLDS LECTURES ON DESIGN IN ART SCHOOL.
