LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Vitalii Dorokhov ("VD") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

VD : In those ancient hours when I was a child, I wanted to invent sea ships because I had the opportunity to visit design firms that designed ocean-going ships. Later I became interested in designing cruise ship interiors.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

VD : I constantly had images of futuristic starship interiors in my head and I wanted to learn how to create drawings so that I could later implement these interiors in space or on sea ships. This was and is a strong motivator that makes me a designer.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

VD : I attended art school. And when I was 15 years old I started an internship in an architectural studio. There I already consciously realized that I wanted to be a designer.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

VD : I would like to develop super high-tech residential capsule modules that can be serviced by humanoid robots.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

VD : I advise young designers to develop the second hemisphere of the brain, it is necessary when working in a virtual environment and when working with three-dimensional models

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

VD : Unfortunately, it's a difficult question. For example, to feel and understand the nature of things, the nature of the material, to capture how the exterior flows into the interior forming a single ensemble.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

VD : I have more than 20 evaluation characteristics. I can say that the assessment of interior design occurs from a photograph, sometimes the interior can be seen in real life. For me, the general combinatorics of all components is important, for example, the overall harmony of all the walls of the interior in relation to the ceiling and floor. The placement of furniture fittings in the interior environment influences natural light on the interior. How to solve the lighting scheme for evening night lighting. And many many others.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

VD : Now the main thesis of good design is a highly functional design that can take into account the needs of accommodating assistant robots.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

VD : I spend all my free time creating a virtual microdistrict of today, in which the service staff are humanoid robots. I am considering several functional concepts in which robot assistants do not intersect with the transit zones of people, being invisible assistants in people’s homes. We communicated with the client remotely by phone. The administrator of the house showed us a room on the floor, he says this is Mr. (N)’s apartment, we started doing renovations, about 90% ready, the client arrived, we take him to the floor, we bring him into the apartment, we show him, he admires and says how beautiful it is, is it like that for me too??
