Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Li Haoyang ("LH") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

LH : I am a graduate student majoring in design.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

LH : I have loved design since I was young and aspire to become a designer.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

LH : I aspire to become a designer

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

LH : I am a product designer and I hope to do more product design.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

LH : Do more design and participate in competitions like A’DESIGN AWARD.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

LH : The difference lies in the depth of thought

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

LH : I think good design resonates with people.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

LH : Good design can withstand the test of history.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

LH : If I have time, I will continue to design the bamboo series.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

LH : I haven't designed my own representative work yet.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

LH : The secret of my design is the use of materials.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

LH : I draw inspiration from masters such as Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe in the field of design.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

LH : I like Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona chair, which has a simple yet aesthetically pleasing design.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

LH : I am good at making bamboo series products, which give chairs a different expression through materials

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

LH : By studying the design of the master.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

LH : I haven't thought about this question.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

LH : Design covers multiple fields.Design is the process of solving problems, it is a creative activity.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

LH : My teacher introduced me and gave me a direction and method for design.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

LH : I am still on my way to becoming a good designer.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

LH : Looking for design direction, I think the concept of design is very important.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

LH : Diversified displays, such as online and offline.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

LH : I want to do a series of bamboo designs in the future.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

LH : I hope to design classic products.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

LH : Looking for design direction, I think the concept of design is very important.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

LH : Solve problems through design and convey the beauty of the world.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

LH : I was particularly excited when the product design sample was completed

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

LH : I am particularly satisfied with the bamboo series because I overcame many difficulties in the design.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

LH : I hope that in the future, the design industry can have more opportunities to collaborate across different industries.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

LH : Design is integrating multiple fields, and future forms of design presentation will become increasingly diverse.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

LH : The time for me to design an item mainly depends on the project timeline.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

LH : I usually start designing from research.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

LH : Less is more.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

LH : I think they complement each other and influence each other.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

LH : Technology is the icing on the cake.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

LH : I use an Apple computer for the design and PS for the software, AI, 3DMAX and other software.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

LH : They make the design more perfect and beautiful.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

LH : I just hope people like my design.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

LH : I would like to get to know this designer and draw inspiration from their experience.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

LH : My classmate is a partner.And I believe in co-design.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

LH : My teacher has a great influence on my design.

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

LH : Design History, Art History.

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

LH : I am on my way to becoming a master designer.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

LH : I want to talk to masters and hear their insights and thoughts on design.

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

LH : I think it's difficult to become famous because there are too many outstanding people.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

LH : My favorite product is MUJI. Its texture and design concept make me feel relaxed.

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

LH : The most interesting part of my design experience was the three-day journey from drawing to creating a physical model, which was a special challenge.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

LH : As a creative design activity, I am very happy. I enjoy browsing different types of designs and finding inspiration from them.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

LH : When I was very young, I aspired to become a designer.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

LH : I think the development is fast and there are infinite possibilities in the future.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

LH : I hope everyone can provide valuable feedback on my design, so that I can continue to improve.
