LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Catherine MOSBACH ("CM") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

CM : we learn biology physic chemistry University Louis Pasteur Strasbourg. Do Landscape architecture study in Versailles ENSP and then DEA history and civilization EHESS Paris

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

CM : I wanted to work outdoor and especially in contact with landscape. Morphing of Life motivated me

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

CM : It was deducted of another choice I could not follow: engineer of forestry. The Ministry of Agriculture proposed a high school of landscape what sounds perfectly to my hear

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

CM : We invest landscape project and are happy to do that. I wish to develop combined project on architecture landscape on the same level like louvre lens

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

CM : Be enthusiastic and believe on their power to transform the world and draw a lot to train their practice and imagination

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

CM : A great designer invest threshold never explored, A good designer do well what is knowed

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

CM : The originality of the proposal

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

CM : The value is to help sensitive evolution of the spirit of the population. So it belongs to the pedagogic frame of our expertise.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

CM : The same but with more freedom

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

CM : None I do realize my dream

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

CM : We do share a magazine when we come out from school and train our critical point of view. Then we were lucky to meet very strong spirit in many scoops

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

CM : Herzog and de Meuron in architecture was a first strong experience

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

CM : Sanaa, Junya Ishigami, Amos Gitai because of the freedom they develop their work

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

CM : Time is necessary for landscape, I do not have one probably -Botanical Garden Bordeaux -Louvre Lens

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

CM : Train a lot an open my mind to other practice

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

CM : Biologist or Chemist

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

CM : Invest spirit in realities

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

CM : The exigence of the professor wo teach me

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

CM : Pages Paysages and the opportunity to develop unique program

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

CM : To be visible from the jury not trained to read unexpected proposal

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

CM : In a way to explain the process

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

CM : Transmit my knowledge to many peoples

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

CM : Develop as much as possible to prove it is possible

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

CM : Perfection but doesn’t exist

DL: How does design help create a better society?

CM : To educate people to open mind

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

CM : Developing microscopic landscapes

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

CM : Both Bordeaux and Louvre

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

CM : Take more experiences to develop innovation

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

CM : May be Japan

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

CM : Around 10 years

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

CM : In my office

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

CM : Draw and think simultaneously

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

CM : Design sets the trends

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

CM : Help to fit on the inspiration

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

CM : Basic acad and hand drawing And then all standard (Rhino-Illustrator-3D,etc)

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

CM : To have smooth connection with people bodies

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

CM : How is linked to the evolution process

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

CM : It make me happy it exist

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

CM : -Architect or Artist -YES with inspired people

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

CM : Biologist

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

CM : Georges Didi Huberman, Gilles Deleuze, Pierre Fedida,…

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

CM : By practicing

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

CM : Chinese painter

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

CM : It is what it is, it helps to make a work more explicit

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

CM : Red, country, oyster, autumn, book, Alexander McQueen

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

CM : Bringing blooms out from a earth wall

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

CM : By drawing with pencil

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

CM : No I do not know that job

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

CM : Better connection with unknown

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

CM : I enjoy do nothing just breath outdoor
