LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Ryohei Kanda ("RK") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

RK : I always loved to make things since I was a child.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

RK : I design from commercial space to residential, living environment, product, and buildings. I am looking forward in the close future to work on a design of a five star hotel.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

RK : A good designer is often consumed, while a great designer does not get consumed.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

RK : A really good design is timeless, and filled with originality. Evaluation of such design depends on the effort of giving birth to the design, and the respect of transcending its message to the world.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

RK : To everyone, to all who would be around me.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

RK : There are a lot of projects not yet realized.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

RK : A football player, a chef, or a patissier.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

RK : Design for me is creating a timeless beautiful appearance within a given space.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

RK : It is not a specific person, but the most support comes from lessons I learnt from the company where I worked before.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

RK : I am currently working on a design of a boutique hotel. I look forward to design more projects in the future.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

RK : The goal is to have my designs necessary for the people’s happinesss.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

RK : Design can create a better influence to the society as beautiful things and functional spaces increase.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

RK : The current project that I am working on, and football sessions twice a week!

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

RK : Truly, a great design like football crosses a border, makes people forget their nationality, and attracts people. Design like football can achieve things neither a diplomat or a politician can do easily.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

RK : I don’t think that influence of trend in design will ever end, but there will be a time when anybody can undertake designs that follow trends. In fact there may be a time when design can be easily made using an i-phone application. The more time shifts on that side, a designer who can design with originality will be treasured.
