Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Giovanni Murgia ("GM") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

GM : My training has nothing to do with the world of design. I did some technical studies but then I realized that my path was elsewhere and I continued towards graphic design and advertising communication

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

GM : Design is giving shape to ideas, creating a relationship between object and person through design.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

GM : Surely, the initial creative phase is the most stimulating one. At this stage, you accumulate experience, curiosity, analysis and attempts that are then finalized in the final project.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

GM : Above all instinct but also experience, without forgetting the ability to grasp cultural insights.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

GM : Good design proves its worth over time. There are objects that last for decades because their design is meant to live for a long time

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

GM : Good design ensures a longer life to the object or product to which it is applied.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

GM : There are no secret ingredients but only study and daily application, open-mindedness and the right amount of creativity

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

GM : L'architetto

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

GM : Design is an interface, the way to relate people and things.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

GM : My myself and I

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

GM : The fortitude and the will to express myself creatively

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

GM : Making the product something people can feel right

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

GM : Always the best

DL: How does design help create a better society?

GM : Making everything around us more and more beautiful to the eye, useful and functional

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

GM : It depends on the project from one month to several weeks

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

GM : I collect information, create moodboards, study the market and look for alternative ideas in other sectors in search of that spark that ignites the creative process.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

GM : Less is more

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

GM : Both things

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

GM : Fondamentale

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

GM : These are elements that serve to convey emotions and therefore play a fundamental role.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

GM : I wish I had made it myself

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

GM : I have almost always acted and worked alone
