LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Vassilis Mylonadis ("VM") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

VM : I studied product design in Art Center College of Design(Europe) and received my BS in Product Design in 1990. After mu graduation I worked as a product designer in PHI Design in France where I was involved in numerous projects from a wide variety of fields. In 1994 I established Mydesign Mylonadis and together with an extensive network of partners we have provided simple and functional solutions to clients who either manufacture consumer products or are in need of exhibition or interior design. This approach has been taken further to the design of finished products for the mass market.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

VM : The ability to be able to design from a pin to a yacht and exercise your mind and broaden your horizons and share this with other people is just beautiful.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

VM : I actually chose to be a designer. As a child I enjoyed scribbling objects and products. I believed I could one day build anything I designed but instead of a magic stick use a pencil.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

VM : I aim to be involved in different fields of design in order to see things from a different prism and hopefully do that extra leap every time I design something new.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

VM : Follow their passion, persevere, do not give up and believe the unbelievable.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

VM : I suppose they dream bigger and give up less easily. They have a gift of envisioning the future and what it will look like. They do not limit themselves to what they know but let themselves go beyond the unknown.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

VM : I believe good design adds quality in our every day lives. If one wants to break the barriers and be a leader in their own field then they should invest in good design.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

VM : That’s why I love design. You can turn every new project into your dream project.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

VM : Probably an architect, it runs in the family.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

VM : Both, as innovative design can set trends and trends tend to inspire designers.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

VM : Very important, that is what good design is about. It’s an equilibrium between the above plus the inspiration.
