LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Doyi Park ("DP") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

DP : Before I attend the Parsons, I was a jsut normal Korean high school student who stuied gerneal subjects such as math, science, society and so on. While I was in the design school I could explore various art and design fields.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

DP : It is exciting process to me to visualized and objectified my idea and abstractive thought. Even though it takes time comsuming, I felt pround and satisfied for that.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

DP : I choose to be a desinger. I am enjoy most of the process.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

DP : Fashion collection.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

DP : It is a little bit embarrassed to hear design legend, since I am a also young designer. I think it is important to enjoy the work and satisfied their work.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

DP : I guess great designer has more strong style and satisfys the client's desire.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

DP : I think good design don't have any useless factor. Each elements do the role as the function,aesthetic way, efficiency and so on.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

DP : Sustainability.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

DP : I want to design for the people who is confidence and has attractive soul. Hoping to make them looks more beautiful and stand out through my garment.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

DP : I want to participate the fashion show and open my own showroom.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

DP : Be focus as much as I can.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

DP : Alexander McQueen. I admire his collection and design identity.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

DP : I like all the designed structures in Rome. It is literally breathtakingly beautiful and strong atmosphere.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

DP : My first work which is the Mannerism collection. while I prepared this collection, I could learn how to enjoy the work and be focus about it. Even though most of the design process were time consuming, I felt valuable and realized that it will be great to live as a designer. Therefore, regardless of the result, it is significant design collection to me.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

DP : Do more research and try to find the elements that people want or need. Then I try to apply these to the deisgn.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

DP : I would be a painter. I really love drawing, sketching, and painting.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

DP : To me, design is like a interaction between me and the public. Even though the outcome comes from my though and idea, eventually it need people's reaction and feedback.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

DP : My family. They always support and encourage me.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

DP : My people. They give me the inspiration and energy.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

DP : Developing my style and design identity. I am still tried to find the way and be improved the design ability.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

DP : My next design project will be womenswear collection as well. I plan to make it more delightful with interested details.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

DP : Creating the garments that make people feel happy and confidence to wear it.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

DP : Expressing their own world and evoking the people want to have it.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

DP : These day, I prepare a branding and new collection. It makes me feel excited.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

DP : My senior year work which is Mannerism collection. I could learn how to handle it when I faced the obstacle or lost the way. The most precious lesson I got from this collection was the attitude to enjoy the work.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

DP : I guess applying the high technology into the design will be considered importantly in the future.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

DP : It normally takes 3 to 6 months for the one collection.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

DP : I usually start at my desk but sometimes I visit the cafe and do research.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

DP : Let's design the garment that makes people feel happy want to wear it.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

DP : I think design sets the trend. It seems like the trends are created by gathering common factors of each brand.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

DP : Make it easier and offer new possiblity.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

DP : Adobe illustrator, photoshop and indesign.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

DP : The color and materials is very important part when creating the fashion collection. This is because it makes the mood and reveals the concept of the collection.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

DP : The design concept. It will help to understand how this design comes from. Since the design is reflected by the concept.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

DP : I feel amazing and get inspired.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

DP : Ideal design partner would be a person who has similar taste and can offset the disadvantage of each other. It would be more great, if the parter and me can give positive and productive energy for each other.

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

DP : Keep repeating and focusing on the design process.

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

DP : It is really pleasured and honored all the awards I had.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

DP : I believe that it is valuable time to live as a designer. Keep be thankful to become a designer.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

DP : No. When I was a little child, I wanted to be a shepherd at the Alps.
