LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Shu-Yuan Chang ("SC") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

SC : Since childhood I have a very strong interest on the painting and I determined to become an artist since high school.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

SC : Because of my family is not rich, parents often take me to a elders home guest, this elders is engaged in international trade, often have foreign stuff brought me! When I was a child, I thought that the house was so pretty, now think about how it was but I was a little old and I would start thinking about the future home.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

SC : Elders think that artists will be poor. In this case I apply their knowledge and choose to be the interior designer, while continuing own learning and let parent don’t be worry.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

SC : Gradually I began to interested in barrier-free space and both the elderly beauty of the use of equipment, even old but also cool! For example: cool wheelchair, cool crutches ⋯ .

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

SC : I personally think that good designers provide good service! The great designer may not serve the individual, but he is writing history to change the next generation of new thinking.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

SC : Practitioners for 20 years, I made numerous space works, now I have a dream, I want to try a private yacht design! How to maximize the performance in the smallest space! At present I am full of my mind to imagine my future yacht.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

SC : Yacht design

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

SC : That is a good question! I would like to be a Michelin chef because of my appetite for food, restaurant dining atmosphere, utensil selection, kitchen use line planning ⋯ have a strong interest and persistence.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

SC : Design always comes from human nature. Human society is highly developed today, the pursuit of human nature, comfort, convenience and both aesthetic design is a natural design ... is changing our lives, a better society is born.

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

SC : There was a residential case, the owner only that he liked the "Suzhou Museum" atmosphere and the single-storey house is really difficult to achieve this mood. I dreamed of the finished scene! Also successfully delivered the task! I am a very special experience.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

SC : This question is so funny! I think we should not be limited to live on the earth .human flying in the sky should be just around the corner! Busy is sure, but the interaction between people is no longer frequent! The requirements of living good will be higher, floating air in the air castles, looking for more empty air and quiet, beyond the source of pollution.
