LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Baris Bumin ("BB") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

BB : I have graduated from department of Industrial Design in Middle East Technical University, in 2016.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

BB : I have always wanted to be a designer because creating new products is so satisfactory.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

BB : I chose to become a designer.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

BB : I have worked on various design projects so far. I really like to work on various projects without exception because every projects teach you different things.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

BB : Work hard with passion.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

BB : Creativity would make you only a good designer, but you have to combine your creativity with your knowledge about production techniques and materials.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

BB : If a product can respond customer needs, we can call it a good design. Hovewer, really good design should provide innovation and advantages in terms of production.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

BB : Good design is the only way to differentiate from other products in the market, so everyone invest in good design

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

BB : Observing people's needs and working hard.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

BB : Hakan Gürsu.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

BB : You will see my greatest design next year. It is a product which responds both customer's and producer's needs. It provides new using experience for customer while provides production and shipping advantages for producer.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

BB : Work hard with passion.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

BB : Maybe I would become a singer.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

BB : Design is an aesthetics way of problem solving in terms of production, so it is a dance in the constraints imposed by production.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

BB : My family and instructors.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

BB : Working hard.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

BB : To reach a lot of people all around the world with my designs.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

BB : It is difficult to make such a choice because each projects I have worked before was so satisfactory.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

BB : Developments in 3D printer technology would provide designer more freedom and creativity without traditional production constraints.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

BB : It depends on project. It can range from 1 week to 1 year.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

BB : Firstly, I start doing market research and observing target group to understand their needs.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

BB : Mostly, modeling and rendering programs.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

BB : It is so important to create the character of prodcut's, reflecting its novelty and attracting customer.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

BB : When I see a creative desing, I think why i did not think of this before

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

BB : Working hard.

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

BB : I will think about that when I will become famous enough.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

BB : I do not remember those times that i was a child, but my family members say that it was obvious.

BARış BUMIN GRADUATED FROM DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRIAL DESIGN IN MIDDLE EAST TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY IN ANKARA, TURKEY, IN 2016. DURING HIS EDUCATION, HE HAS WORKED ON MANY DESIGN PROJECTS IN VARIOUS FIELDS. ALSO HE HAS DONE INTERNSHIP AT WELL KNOWN COMPANIES IN TURKEY, SO HE HAS EXPERIENCE IN DIFFERENT INDUTRIES. AFTER HIS GRATUATION, HE STARTED WORKING AS A FREELANCE DESIGNER, AND ENTERED SEVERAL NATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION TO MAKE ONE'S MARK AS AN INDUSTRIAL DESIGNER. HE THINKS THAT INDUSTRIAL DESIGN IS AN AESTHETICS WAY OF PROBLEM SOLVING.
