LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Hsin Ting Weng ("HTW") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

HTW : National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, Department of Visual Communication Design

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

HTW : With regard to the social contributions, it reminds me of the winner of Pulitzer Architecture Prize this year - B.V.Doshi (Indian architect). His design practice of taking human beings as the essential is not just evoking resonance but also deeply affecting the modern societies. As for me, so far although I do not have that strong impact on others I would do my best with limited conditions and focus on better living to practice my design. Meanwhile, I would find the appropriate balance of the natural environment, society and the financial conditions.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

HTW : Yes, I want become a designer that bring the better life for everyone.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

HTW : Favorite design is different style, material, culture to mix and design, can express their unique language design

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

HTW : In addition to all the designs that cater to customers’s requirements in terms of functionality, habits, experience, and visual impact, it should also keep the details and qualities to achieve the appropriate balance and harmony among all the elements of that space.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

HTW : With regard to the social contributions, it reminds me of the winner of Pulitzer Architecture Prize this year - B.V.Doshi (Indian architect). His design practice of taking human beings as the essential is not just evoking resonance but also deeply affecting the modern societies. As for me, so far although I do not have that strong impact on others I would do my best with limited conditions and focus on better living to practice my design. Meanwhile, I would find the appropriate balance of the natural environment, society and the financial conditions.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

HTW : In addition to all the designs that cater to customers’s requirements in terms of functionality, habits, experience, and visual impact, it should also keep the details and qualities to achieve the appropriate balance and harmony among all the elements of that space.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

HTW : I imagine a project that is not confined by the realm of time and presents the balance of the form, function and quality of life through various materials and details.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

HTW : Like extremely symmetrical and highly asymmetrical design. If space allows, symmetrical design will be the most classic, if space is not allowed, like the use of irregular space asymmetric method, in a broken way in the reorganization of the complete shape

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

HTW : “Less is More”

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

HTW : Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is my favorite. I appreciate and agree with his famous idea “Less is More”. My own interpretation of it is that decoration is not completely unacceptable but it has to be used with meaning and propose.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

HTW : Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is my favorite.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

HTW : Usually communicate with the guests to start, about 2 months to end of this project about 4 months

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

HTW : After making sure that we make a design that has met the customer’s need, fit their lifestyles, solved the possible user problems, I would go through the whole process of design again and make confirmation with customers, ensuring every detail is on the right tack.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

HTW : I think design sets the trends, because everywhere has different culture, color, weather

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

HTW : Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is my favorite.

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

HTW : For up and coming designers, i would suggest them not to just conform to what customers demand but to focus on what you, as a designer, want. Also, every time when their customers ask for revision, they could see it as a chance to learn instead of seeing it as an obstruction. In this way, things will get better.
