Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer 1983ASIA ("1983ASIA") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

1983ASIA : We’re a design team, YAO from Malaysia and SUSU from China. Different regional origins bring wonderful cultural shock. Both of us are college graduates majoring in visual communication.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

1983ASIA : Our love for designing makes us designers.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

1983ASIA : We choose to be designers.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

1983ASIA : We were both brand designers at the very beginning, but we are striving for transboundary and breakthrough and exploring in fashion design and product design.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

1983ASIA : Never forget your original will.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

1983ASIA : Staying persistentis hard work, and“greatness” also comes from “step-by-step”persistence. Never forget your original will.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

1983ASIA : Elaborate polish, continuous breakthrough and self-reflection.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

1983ASIA : A good design will lead people to pursue beauty and thus drive the society towards a better future.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

1983ASIA : Creations related to Asian culture.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

1983ASIA : Staycurious and keep reading and hand-painting.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

1983ASIA : I staycurious about the world and keep reading, making sure I’m still active and enthusiastic aboutcreation.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

1983ASIA : An animal feeder or a singer.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

1983ASIA : Design is bundled with commercial society and closely to art. Designers should be able to possessboth the features and work between sense and sensibility.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

1983ASIA : Everything is oriented form a belief.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

1983ASIA : To lead people to pursue beauty and thus to drive the society towards a better future.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

1983ASIA : Nowadays, people are most exposed to commodity. Designers, by injecting the combination of culture and design into commodity,could lead people to pursue beauty and to build a better society.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

1983ASIA : Four months. Because at the beginning, we need to have a complete knowledge about the project, including the field and culture involved as well as the needs of customers.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

1983ASIA : Beginning with itsbackground.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

1983ASIA : Everything is oriented form a belief.

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

1983ASIA : We are the best partner of each other.

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

1983ASIA : A designer needs to read a lot to know more about the world and enrich his knowledge. So I think every book has more or less impact on my design. Anyway, reading always does good.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

1983ASIA : No. But I grew up like to do manual and watch animation
