Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Shin-Yi Lin ("SL") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

SL : I was not a design majored student but I was encouraged by a professor who gave me a lot of faith in pursuing my dream of becoming a space designer and he recommended architecture tutorials in university to me before I went to London for further professional lessons.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

SL : That I shall not be bored in doing this job!

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

SL : I made up my mind to become one.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

SL : No limits! Challenges are welcomed.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

SL : assumption boldly and investigation carefully.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

SL : A great designer designs a project that stayed classic as time goes by.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

SL : that it has a good story to tell in his design.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

SL : helps people appreciate everything that happens around us.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

SL : No limits! Every project has its own fun!

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

SL : I wish to try more!

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

SL : Be optimistic!

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

SL : Tadao Ando, Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

SL : the light Church by Tadao Ando, the vocabulary in this project is so straight yet strong that makes it impossible to forget.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

SL : the movement and details are mostly appreciated.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

SL : Think more on the users' aspects of.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

SL : to solve problems!

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

SL : think positive!

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

SL : Obstacles never ends, turning them into a good design spot is the best way.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

SL : with a good story or a beautiful scene.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

SL : everything is possible!

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

SL : to have fun and bring more fun to my surroundings.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

SL : energetic and positive thoughts delivering.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

SL : that makes the world a beautiful place to lived in.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

SL : simple but elegant and delightful in every little details.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

SL : I shall be proud to say that every little piece in the space is hand picked by myself.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

SL : the thoughtfulness and needed that yet to be discovered.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

SL : enormous wild I think...

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

SL : could be very quick could be very long!

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

SL : taking a vacation first!

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

SL : be bold! be optimistic!

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

SL : I hope design sets the trends.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

SL : putting the thoughts closer the reality.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

SL : what trigger the thoughts?

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

SL : crazy and wild thinkers

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

SL : live healthy and stay positive!

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

SL : I guess the fearlessness might be one characteristics.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

SL : bring more fun to life!
