Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Shin-Yuan Fang ("SF") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

SF : I graduated from NTUA. And worked for KRIS YAO ARTECH and Steven Leach.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

SF : A house should be a place where you enjoy being, where you feel good, and where you can relax. So I want to do this.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

SF : I chose it.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

SF : Interior design.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

SF : More passion.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

SF : Not trend-followers. And I have a preference for timelessness.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

SF : Listen to my instinct when I am working allows me to improvise in my own way.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

SF : Tadao Ando.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

SF : When styling spaces, a few simple and inexpensive alterations can result in an entirely different ambiance.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

SF : I love to travel and interested in observing cities’ phenomena.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

SF : I enjoy all kinds of delicious foods, maybe I will be a cook.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

SF : My partner and clients.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

SF : Many factors, but client is one of the most important factor.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

SF : Very interesting commercial design.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

SF : With my work, I aspire to turn my client’s dreams into reality.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

SF : More groundbreaking.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

SF : 6 months~24 months.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

SF : Start from the heart.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

SF : Both are correct.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

SF : I prefer to use the pan and papers.

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

SF : Interact with one another.

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

SF : Beautiful picture.

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

SF : Willing to learn new knowledge, new skills and new method constantly.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

SF : Blue ashes, Rome, Steak, Fall, Panerai.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

SF : I like to draw and play to building block.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

SF : Recent projects have revealed a further interest in eco-friendly design, and the use of art to penetrate daily life.
