LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Golden Ho ("GH") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

GH : Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts(GAFA),the only one of its kind in South China, is the predecessor of Central South College of Fine Arts, a merger of South China Institute of Art and Literature in Guangzhou, Central South Institute of Art and Literature in Wuhan, and the Guangxi Institute of Art.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

GH : Because of love

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

GH : The first one.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

GH : The interior design.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

GH : Keep moving.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

GH : The power of thinking

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

GH : The form shown is the most unique aspect of your design. The whole process of weaving, it like a silkworm spits a cocooning. Test the connection order continually, Control the direction of silk and density, to achieve the ideal effect. Such the multi-individual, “Shell” forms traction and united the interaction between thoughts and actions. This is not only a creative process, but also a design process as a show of “performance art”.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

GH : Everyone is keen on the perfect design.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

GH : We attempted to rediscover the alternating potential of order construction. Urged by the question on how to integrate architecture to further interact and blend cities, environments, human beings and space, begin to in-depth discussion, finally create a space that can let the heart calm.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

GH : The architectural design.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

GH : Adhere and pay attention to detail.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

GH : Through the network platform such as excellent design websites, some influential Design Awards, Micro-channel public number, and so on, understand the international top design with the latest information. Meanwhile, I also subscribe to the excellent design magazines at home and abroad, as to update my understanding of the trend of the design industry.

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

GH : Zaha's projects.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

GH : Transparent Shell.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

GH : We attempted to rediscover the alternating potential of order construction. Urged by the question on how to integrate architecture to further interact and blend cities, environments, human beings and space, begin to in-depth discussion, finally create a space that can let the heart calm.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

GH : I will never change my mind. Designer is my life job.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

GH : Actually, building is constantly changing, means you when moving the body will feel the different design. Experience the perspective of the overlap, the art, architecture, landscape combine into one structure, continuously into the crowd, listen their inner voices, with their own efforts to change now seemingly harmonious order.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

GH : My family.

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

GH : I am dedicated to the pursuit of perfection

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

GH : How to innovate.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

GH : The architectural design.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

GH : To create a different space.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

GH : Yes, I think so.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

GH : Combine Aesthetics and Function

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

GH : Creating a different space.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

GH : Transparent Shell.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

GH : Space become more and more diverse

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

GH : Everywhere.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

GH : About six months

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

GH : At first, looking for inspiration.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

GH : Never give up.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

GH : More and more diverse

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

GH : Pursuing perfection.

GH : To make space more complete

GH : Never give up

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

GH : Yes of course.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

GH : Space is more and more diverse

GH : My design idea.
