LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Arman Farahmand ("AF") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

AF : I graduated in Industrial Design at the Art University of Tehran in 2014.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

AF : I've dreamed of becoming an Industrial Designer since I was 12. As a child, i loved to create things, mixing and matching my toys was a daily routine.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

AF : Absolutely I chose to, I fought for it. in my family, almost all of the young members will become engineers or doctors and my father wanted me to become a doctor but I chose my path to become the one who creates.

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

AF : I love Modular thinking and way of life, on the other hand, because I care about our planet and human's living environment I always try to consider Sustainability.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

AF : What does a bodybuilder do to become one? they practice, they experience and they work their ass off to make huge muscles and to get in shape! For young designers i have to say that they must try to experience more and more, they have to challenge themselves and they have to learn from their mistakes and not be afraid of failure. So TRY TRY TRY!

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

AF : Details. Not just in Physical Design, But in the experience it makes!

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

AF : Details again. and again the experience, its about how easy and pleasentful the user gets to what he/she wants.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

AF : Good design makes life easier. Good design makes the atmosphere beautiful, It has an impact that can not be ignored.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

AF : I'd like to design daily life objects for humanity, not only for a specific part of people.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

AF : Secrets! just can't tell :))

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

AF : LOVE, I've had the passion for almost 20 years, each and every day it goes wilder and wilder.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

AF : Karim Rashid, Philippe Starck, Nader Faghih Zade, Mostafa Arvand, Mohsen Koofiani

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

AF : I love lots of designs from different designers, I just can't find one as my favorite! for example, the Garbo waste can from Karim is a very successful design because it is beautiful, simple, easy to manufacture, easy to use and understand, and most importantly, it is spread now all over the globe.

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

AF : I think Morfius Modular Furniture is the greatest one, Its flexibility in use and form is what makes it different.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

AF : Training the brain, experiencing new challenges and don't giving up.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

AF : psychologist or social activist.

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

AF : Design is a simple and useful solution that is beautiful and harmonic.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

AF : Me, my ambition and many of my close friends like Mostafa Arvand

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

AF : Not giving up.

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

AF : I think the best way to present a work of design is through International Design Awards and Competitions like A'design awards.

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

AF : Really can not talk about that.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

AF : I love to reach a place where I can bring Design Objects to people's daily life.

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

AF : New, simple, beautiful designs that are feasible to buy.

DL: How does design help create a better society?

AF : By engaging in society's problems and solving them.

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

AF : New Modular system solutions.

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

AF : Angel Island project because it catches every sense of the audience.

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

AF : I think what shakes the design industry is the rapid prototyping methods.

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

AF : Virtual Reality and Metaverse.

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

AF : It depends on very different aspects, It takes from weeks to months.

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

AF : Defining the problem and then observing the challenge closely.

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

AF : I win or I learn.

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

AF : I'd like to belive that the design sets the trends.

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

AF : Technology has a big role in design, from tools for creation to presentation methods.

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

AF : Rhino for modeling and Keyshot/Cinema 4D for rendering

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

AF : The surface makes the feelings and the sense of design.

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

AF : I love people to ask me "Why?", why this way?

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

AF : "LOVE IT"

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

AF : Absolutely! a good design always comes out of a good team.

DL: Which people you interacted had the most influence on your design?

AF : The ones who criticized my design with a detailed scope.

DL: Which books you read had the most effect on your design?

AF : Shoe Dog, Midnight Library, Atomic habits, Universe frequency

DL: How did you develop your skills as a master designer?

AF : by facing challenges that I didn't know how to overcome.

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

AF : Sir Richard Branson, Karim Rashid

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

AF : To be honest I don't feel any uncomfortable on the other hand I don't see myself such famous.

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

AF : Orange, My Heart, Loobia Polo, Spring, bicycle and Xiaomi

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

AF : It was back in university student times, I was recognized by the sound of my laughter in university, if I didn't laugh hard one day in university my colleagues believed I wasn't there or something was wrong with me that day :)))

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

AF : By facing my challenges, and overcoming my situations in the path of my goals and missions.

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

AF : I think so, my paintings were great as a 3-year-old child and I could figure out how my toys worked, I had access to various tools because my father had a tools shop in town.

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

AF : I can not see that.

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

AF : I Live in Iran for now and I am single right now :)
