LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Design Legends ("DL") had the distinct honour to interview legendary designer Peter Stasek ("PS") for their original perspective and innovative approach to design as well as their creative lifestyle, we are very pleased to share our interview with our distinguished readers.

DL: Could you please tell us a bit about your design background and education?

PS : My whole family consisted of architects and artists. Thus my study of architecture at the Bauhaus University in Weimar was a logical continuation. Nevertheless, from the outset I have pursued an organic language of form, contrary to the scholarly form of the Bauhaus teaching.

DL: What motivates you to design in general, why did you become a designer?

PS : After a long observation of the surrounding environment I came to the conclusion that only the organic language which is based on the evolution can be the real basis for a sustainable design = biomimicry.

DL: Did you choose to become a designer, or you were forced to become one?

PS : In the creative work I have simply grown in...

DL: What do you design, what type of designs do you wish to design more of?

PS : Design as a biomimicry in the form of architecture, interior and furniture design.

DL: What should young designers do to become a design legend like you?

PS : Never stand still and always look for new things which are inspired especially in research and science.

DL: What distinguishes between a good designer and a great designer?

PS : I believe in a good designer is always the form and function in line, with a great designer is still the emotion as an increase.

DL: What makes a good design a really good design, how do you evaluate good design?

PS : If I can still admire a design after a long time as on the first day then it is for me a very good design with long-lasting value.

DL: What is the value of good design? Why should everyone invest in good design?

PS : Good design is an important part of the culture of each individual. It can be interpreted as evidence of good taste, the already reached level of form understanding.

DL: What would you design and who would you design for if you had the time?

PS : I would rather develop new forms of organically shaped housings which have very little to do with the present ideas. From these forms of housing I would like to develop entirely new landscapes, which in the form of artificial nature fit into the real nature and form a unity.

DL: What is the dream project you haven’t yet had time to realize?

PS : The implementation of an organically shaped skyscraper under all environmental aspects. The interior structure should be designed in accordance with the external form. The use of new materials and techniques like 3d print would be the prerequisite.

DL: What is your secret recipe of success in design, what is your secret ingredient?

PS : The Immagination of the Non-Touchable. The shaping of the light.

DL: Who are some other design masters and legends you get inspired from?

PS : Hani Rashid, Massimiliano Fuksas, Zaha Hadid

DL: What are your favorite designs by other designers, why do you like them?

PS : Roca London Gallery by Zaha Hadid

DL: What is your greatest design, which aspects of that design makes you think it is great?

PS : I think so far only a few components of this concept exist until now. The final design concept is still in development ... It is intended to include the new understanding of matter based on Qunten's phisics. It should include the new understanding of materiality. Maybe with the help of holography, there should be no distinction between the real and unreal parts of the design.

DL: How could people improve themselves to be better designers, what did you do?

PS : With the help of augmented reality, everyone is given the opportunity to see what can be real expected. With this computing support, many things can be improved before it is implemented. However, the most important prerequisite for any development is always the idea which is born in the designer's head.

DL: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

PS : Nature caretaker

DL: How do you define design, what is design for you?

PS : Design is the visible shaping of all properties. In addition to the functional correspondence, it should also be able to arouse emotions.

DL: Who helped you to reach these heights, who was your biggest supporter?

PS : My wife Luana

DL: What helped you to become a great designer?

PS : Do not be distracted by anything and continue to build your own ideas.

DL: What were the obstacles you faced before becoming a design master?

PS : Too many surrounding voices

DL: How do you think designers should present their work?

PS : In form of a moving animation

DL: What’s your next design project, what should we expect from you in future?

PS : There are currently multiple requests for resort projects, as well as medical facilities. There is also the chance to develop the design in the form of Biomimicry.

DL: What’s your ultimate goal as a designer?

PS : 3d printed architecture on a large scale

DL: What people expect from an esteemed designer such as yourself?

PS : Continuous quality as usual with a certain degree of increase

DL: How does design help create a better society?

PS : Through the understanding of the form language the feeling of commonness can be strengthened

DL: What are you currently working on that you are especially excited about?

PS : 3d printed pavilions as a wine testing facilities

DL: Which design projects gave you the most satisfaction, why?

PS : Pharmacy Gate 4D - an intermediary architectural concept for the entrance hall of the German branch of Abbott, USA. This interior project was created in dependence on the company slogan „A Promise for Life“ and thus is able to express this company feature in the form of corporate architecture, amongst others with the aid of holographic projection

DL: What would you like to see changed in design industry in the coming years?

PS : Even more freedom of form through digital fabrication

DL: Where do you think the design field is headed next?

PS : New means of transport, new forms of living and working

DL: How long does it take you to finalize a design project?

PS : Some months to a few years

DL: When you have a new design project, where do you start?

PS : On the bike in nature

DL: What is your life motto as a designer?

PS : Imagination is more important than knowledge

DL: Do you think design sets the trends or trends set the designs?

PS : The very good design developed by few becomes a massive imitation of the average

DL: What is the role of technology when you design?

PS : The technology is not the primary, this is only sought after the first idea exists

DL: What kind of design software and equipment do you use in your work?

PS : 3ds Max, Cinema 4d, ArchiCAD, Photoshop

DL: What is the role of the color, materials and ambient in design?

PS : First the space must be defined in its 3d form, the surfaces at least partially as a continuation of the construction, the colors minimized best in the form of illumination

DL: What do you wish people to ask about your design?

PS : The first emerging idea

DL: When you see a new great design or product what comes into your mind?

PS : Perhaps this is the approach a bit to think about

DL: Who is your ideal design partner? Do you believe in co-design?

DL: Irrelative of time and space, who you would want to meet, talk and discuss with?

DL: How do you feel about all the awards and recognition you had, is it hard to be famous?

PS : This is perhaps only a very small foundation stone as confirmation of what will be developed

DL: What is your favorite color, place, food, season, thing and brand?

PS : Besides the non-colors, it may be neon green and orange, space with a wide view…, seafood, autumn, subwoofer, B&O

DL: Please tell us a little memoir, a funny thing you had experienced as a designer?

PS : Sometimes you reach in five minutes more than in months. However, the first bet must always remain visible. Thus the first sketch with a "dumpling" as a central island in space becomes one of the best dental practices in Germany.

DL: What makes your day great as a designer, how do you motivate yourself?

PS : A good feeling to bring a new idea forward

DL: When you were a little child, was it obvious that you would become a great designer?

PS : When daydreams repress the reality

DL: What do you think about future; what do you see will happen in thousand years from now?

PS : The real and not real world will form a unity

DL: Please tell us anything you wish your fans to know about you, your design and anything else?

PS : My firm conviction is that the information is the real building material of our universe. All visible forms serve only the confirmation of a train of thought in the human brain.
